The Girl Who Was His Replacement for Nine Years Finally Left Him Chapter 01

My arms-dealer husband and I used to have sex every night, leaving the bed such a wreck that eight clean sheets had to be changed every morning.

And somehow, it still wasn’t enough for him.

So after nine years of marriage, he had spent the last eight and a half keeping a mistress on the side.

I had never made a scene over it. Not once.

The first rule of the Valenti family code was simple: when your husband played around behind your back, you did not scream, you did not confront the press, and you put his reputation and interests above everything else.

So when Matteo Moretti and Chloe Rossi finished their little tryst, I pushed open the door, picked up their clothes scattered across the floor, and smoothed out the sheets they had crumpled into a mess.

“Don, I’ll take care of the cleanup. No point leaving evidence around to spoil your night.”

His men froze for two seconds outside the room before a wave of barely suppressed laughter broke out.

Several of them turned away, their shoulders shaking violently.

“The Don really broke her,” one of them muttered. “Blair finally learned her place. She’ll even clean up after him now.”

Matteo’s cold, unreadable gaze settled on my face. A lit cigar rested between his fingers.

He gave a mocking laugh, then flicked the ash straight onto my cheek.

“Look at you, playing the obedient wife.” His voice was laced with contempt. “You learned to behave pretty damn fast. So tell me. What are you plotting this time?”

I endured the burning sting on my cheek and lowered my voice.

“I want to go back to the Moretti estate.”

Matteo didn’t ask why.

I had always hated the dark, suffocating atmosphere of the Moretti estate. He knew that better than anyone. Yet he didn’t question why I suddenly wanted to go back.

He merely waved a hand, granting permission as casually as if I had asked to leave the room.

He couldn’t even be bothered to look at me for another second.

Of course.

After nine years of marriage, apparently our relationship was worth no more than a sheet of paper.

When the car stopped in front of the estate, I went inside and immediately bowed before the old man seated in a high-backed chair.

“Godfather Vincenzo, I don’t want to renew the ninth marriage agreement. In three days, Matteo and I will officially reach the end of our contract. Once it expires, I’ll give up every trust fund and walk away. I’ll never set foot in Ironport again for the rest of my life. Please, let me go.”

Back then, the Moretti family had looked down on me because I came from a relatively new-money family.

The former head of the Moretti family, Godfather Vincenzo Moretti, had secretly signed a marriage contract with the Valenti family without Matteo’s knowledge. The contract had to be renewed every year.

Its first clause was carved in stone:

[If Matteo Moretti takes another woman, it will be considered a failure on Blair Valenti’s part to fulfill her duties as a wife and uphold the standards expected of a Mafia wife. Blair Valenti will not only be punished by the Valenti family, she will also forfeit the right to ask for a divorce. Every matter concerning the marriage will be decided by the Moretti family.]

Godfather Vincenzo remained silent for a long time before finally sighing.

“Enough. You haven’t given the Moretti family an heir in nine years. And the family has already chosen a more suitable match for Matteo. If you want to dissolve the agreement, then dissolve it.”

Our marriage contract hadn’t even expired, and the Moretti family had already picked out Matteo’s next wife.

“You practically begged to marry Matteo back then. So why now…” Godfather Vincenzo let the rest of the sentence hang.

My eyes reddened. I forced a smile.

“I don’t dare fall in love anymore.”

Nine years ago, when our families first arranged the marriage, Matteo and I had been inseparable. Everyone in Ironport’s upper circles envied me for landing such a perfect husband.

Whenever I craved something late at night, Matteo would drive across half the city just to bring me crème caramel.

Whenever my period left me shaking with pain, he’d track down doctors to help me get my health under control and have a nutritionist design meals specifically for me.

He knew I preferred flowers in cool, dark shades, and every morning, there would be a single black datura waiting beside my bed.

Everyone said I had married the right man. The Moretti family’s Godfather, the most feared name in the arms trade, had treated me like I was the most precious thing in his world.

But six months later, Matteo got restless.

He took another woman.

When the Valenti family dragged me into their punishment room and the whip came down across my back, I barely felt the pain.

I was too consumed with rage.

I hunted down the woman who had slept with my husband. I cursed at her, hit her, and made such a spectacle of myself that the entire city was talking.

The Valenti family was furious. They dragged me home to punish me.

But before the leather whip could even touch my skin, Matteo’s voice thundered through the room.

“You’re going to put your hands on my wife? Do you really think I don’t exist?”

After that, no matter how viciously I fought or how badly I went after the women Matteo kept outside our marriage, the Valenti family never dared interfere again.

For as long as I made trouble, Matteo protected me.

Until Chloe came along.
