He Made Me Draw A Lottery For Our Dead Child Chapter 05

The moment I said it, Bastian’s pupils contracted, but I was already racing downstairs.

Firefighters had already inflated a rescue cushion below.

Dad landed in the center, but the impact still knocked him unconscious. Blood poured from his

mouth.

For one terrifying moment, I forgot how to breathe.

“Dad…”

I ran to him, but the sight of all that blood stopped me cold. Afraid of hurting him, I dropped to my knees and begged the people around us for help.

“Someone help him! Please, save my dad!”

Then I carefully gathered him into my arms.

Memories of him raising me flooded my

mind.

Mom had died when I was young, so Dad had been both parents to me. No matter how hard life

became for him, he never let me go without.

I couldn’t imagine how I would survive if I lost him.

The ambulance arrived within minutes.

Paramedics placed Dad on a stretcher, rushed him inside, and immediately began treating him.

Only then did Bastian come downstairs with Colette.

Bastian looked dazed and at a loss, as if he hadn’t expected things to go this far.

“Elowen, I…”

Without even looking at him, I warned in a hoarse voice, “Get away from me.”

Before he could answer, Colette jumped to his defense.

“How can you treat him like that?”

“Drawing tokens has always been Bas’s rule. You didn’t draw green. That’s not his fault.”

Bastian said nothing, making no attempt to contradict her.

I finally looked at them. The grief and fury in my eyes made Colette fall silent.

She faltered. “You…”

I didn’t waste another word on either of them.

I slapped Colette, then Bastian.

Colette’s face twisted with humiliation.

Pain burned across Bastian’s cheek, but shock wasn’t the only thing in his eyes.

Fear.

In all our years of marriage, I’d never struck him before. This was also the first time he’d seen

genuine hatred in my eyes.

This wasn’t like any of our past arguments.

He hadn’t expected his refusal to lead to this, but the paramedics were now fighting to save my

father’s life only a few feet away.

His breathing grew heavier.

For the first time, he seemed to sense that he was about to lose something.

Colette recovered and shouted, “You hit me again? What gives you the right to put your hands on

me?”

Before I could respond, Bastian grabbed her arm.

“Enough. Can you stop making this worse?”

Colette froze.

She bit her lip and fell silent, her eyes filling with tears.

I ignored them and focused on the ambulance.

A paramedic opened the door.

“We need one family member to ride with him.”

I climbed in immediately.

Bastian tried to follow, but I shoved him back.

“Stay away from me,” I said, colder than I’d ever sounded.

He looked completely at a loss. “Elowen.”

I slammed the door, and the ambulance pulled away.

Dad lay before me, deathly pale, and I was terrified he might slip away at any moment.

Even my voice shook.

“How is my dad?”

The paramedic’s expression was grim. “He’s in critical condition. We need to get him into emergency surgery as soon as we reach the hospital.“”

Tears spilled down my face as I clenched my hands.

I could only pray.

“Mom, if you can hear me, please help Dad make it through this…”

An hour later, the light above the operating room came on.

I stood frozen outside, unable to take my eyes off the doors.

I felt as if one moment of distraction might cost me the last family member I had left.

Hurried footsteps approached behind me.

Bastian stopped behind me, his expression conflicted.

“How’s your father?”

I didn’t answer. It took everything I had not to lose control.

For once, the man who always seemed unshakable didn’t know what to do.

“He’ll be all right. And the case against him, I…”

“Bastian.”

I cut him off, surprised by how calm my voice sounded.

Now that the moment had finally arrived, I realized I wasn’t sad about ending our marriage.

I handed him the divorce papers I’d already prepared.

“Sign them.”

“I don’t want any of your money. We don’t have shared assets to fight over, so sign the papers and let this marriage end.”
