They Called Me Copy Girl. I Wrote the Law. Chapter 14: Five Years Later

The Marlowe Clinic for Wrongful Conviction takes the cases nobody else will take.

Two hundred and six matters last year. Nineteen exonerations. Eleven kids in law school on full scholarship who could not have afforded a single semester otherwise.

Win rate I’m not allowed to be proud of out loud, so I’m saying it here.

My office has windows.

That still surprises me some mornings.

Lily is twenty-four and in her second year of law school, which she blames entirely on me.

“You ruined me,” she says, roughly monthly. “I was going to do something normal.”

“You wanted to be an influencer.”

“I would have been excellent.”

Marisol runs our operations. She has an office bigger than mine and she has never once let me forget who dug the badge logs out of the system at 2 a.m.

Mr. Abernathy, seventy-six now, comes to every scholarship ceremony and cries at every single one.

And Sebastian –

Sebastian still drives a nine-year-old gray sedan, still eats standing up, still says the most devastating things

in the flattest possible voice.

He put a ring on my finger on a terrace in Lisbon three years ago, and the inscription inside isn’t a date.

It says scared and right.

He had to ask Abernathy to find the letter to get the wording exact. He never told me. Abernathy did,

immediately, because Abernathy cannot keep a secret to save his life.

Last month I stood at a podium at the annual ceremony, in front of two hundred people, under a photograph

of a woman with my face and better hair.

where I was her lawyer, and every skill I had came from her, so every time I stood up I was standing next to him.
