We Planned Nine Weddings, All Canceled For His Superstitious Childhood Friend Chapter 08

I looked calmly at Julian’s furious mother.

Od memories came flooding back.

She had always looked down on me for coming from an ordinary, cash-strapped family. In her eyes,

I had no business marrying into the Prescotts.

When she was bedridden and sick, I spent two straight weeks at her side, feeding her, helping bathe her, and taking care of her around the clock.

Once, she casually mentioned that she loved emeralds. I scrimped and saved for more than half a year and spent nearly everything I had on an emerald bracelet for her.

The very next day, I saw it on the wrist of the Prescott housekeeper.

Sienna, on the other hand, gave her an ordinary platinum bracelet.

Julian’s mother showed it off constantly, praised Sienna to anyone who would listen, and acted as though she couldn’t wait to have her as a daughter-in-law.

I had spent years bending over backward to please this woman for one reason only: she was Julian’s

mother.

Now, looking at her furious, hypocritical face, all I felt was disgust and cold contempt.

I smiled without warmth.

“Your family was willing to replace the bride in front of an entire room of guests. You were perfectly happy to benefit from the fact that I risked my life for Julian. And you stood by while a liar humiliated me for ten years.”

“But I tell the truth in public, and somehow I’m the one you want to condemn and destroy?”

“Did you really think I was going to spend the rest of my life hiding your family’s filth for you?”

Her face flushed with rage as she pointed at me and shouted.

“You really have to take this all the way? You’re leaving yourself no way back! You’ll never be welcome in the Prescott family again!”

Elliot slipped an arm protectively around my waist.

“Mrs. Prescott.”

“Mara and I are legally married now. She has no interest in ever being part of the Prescott family

again.”

Julian’s mother exploded.

“You two are disgusting! You’ve been sleeping together behind my son’s back this whole time!

You’re both shameless! Go to hell!”

Elliot’s expression darkened instantly.

“Watch your mouth.”

“I’ve never hit a woman. But insult my wife again, and I won’t make any promises.”

The force of the warning made her stagger, nearly losing her balance.

Julian hurried forward to steady his mother, then looked at me. Pain and obsession twisted together

in his eyes.

“Mara, did things between us really have to become this ugly?”

“I told you this ceremony was only for show! You were the only woman I ever intended to marry! Why did you have to take this so far?”

The sheer absurdity of it was almost laughable.

“Then this worked out perfectly, didn’t it?”

“You gave the ceremony to someone else. I made it legal with someone else.”

“What’s the problem?”

Julian’s face went rigid.

“That’s different! That wedding wasn’t real! It doesn’t count!”

Whatever patience I had left disappeared.

“Julian.”

“You can stand at the altar with another woman and dismiss the whole thing as ‘not real.’””

“So what exactly counts as real to you?”

“Your nerve. That’s real enough, isn’t it?”

That shattered whatever façade Julian had left, along with the stubborn delusion he had been

clinging to.

I didn’t spare him another glance.

I took Elliot’s hand and walked away from the wreckage of the wedding without looking back.

Julian tried to chase after us, but the Vaughn family’s bodyguards immediately moved in and. blocked his path.

All he could do was stand there and watch us leave side by side until we disappeared from sight.

A crushing emptiness opened inside him, followed by pain and regret so fierce they nearly

swallowed him whole.
