You Want Him? Take Him! But I’m Keeping All the Assets Chapter 09

Another year passed, and York was released from prison.

On the day he was released, I happened to be visiting Ian.

York’s parents had taken Ian to the prison gates to pick him up.

I ran into them at their front door.

York had changed a lot: his hair had turned quite gray, and his back was slightly hunched. The sparkle was gone from his eyes, leaving only weariness and the marks of a hard life.

When he saw me, his eyes lit up instantly.

He pushed his parents aside, hurried over to me, and reached out to grab my hand.

I stepped aside to avoid him.

“Kayla,” he said hoarsely, his voice thick with pleading, “I know I was wrong. I really do know I was

wrong.”

“These past years in prison, I’ve spent every day reflecting on my mistakes. I shouldn’t have betrayed you. I shouldn’t have let you and Ian down.”

“Will you forgive me? Let’s get back together and start over. I’ll take good care of you both, and I’ll never make the same mistake again.”

His parents chimed in, saying York had truly changed and begging me to give him another chance.

Ian tugged at my sleeve and whispered, “Mom, please forgive Dad. I want Mom and Dad to be together.”

Seeing the hopeful look in Ian’s eyes, I felt a twinge of emotion.

But it was only for a moment.

I knelt down, ruffled Ian’s hair, and said gently, “Ian, Mom and Dad can’t be together again.”

“But Mom will always be here for you, and Dad will be here for you too. We both love you.”

Then, I stood up and said to York.

“I won’t forgive you.”

“What happened back then is like a thorn stuck in my heart. I can’t pull it out, so the wound can’t

heal.”

“I don’t love you anymore. I don’t even hate you anymore.”

“There’s nothing left but Ian between us.”

York’s face turned pale in an instant, his eyes filled with despair.

“Why?” he murmured. “I know I was wrong. Why can’t you just give me one more chance?”

“A chance?” I looked at him. “I gave you a chance.”

“When Faye returned to the country and you said you wouldn’t go to the party, I gave you a

chance.”

“When you told me you were working overtime on the weekend, but I saw you embracing Faye, I was still clinging to a sliver of hope.”

“You were the one who crushed that last shred of hope with your own hands.”

“Some mistakes are unforgivable.”

“I’ve started a new life, and I won’t look back.”

With that, I turned and walked away.

Behind me, I could hear York crying and Ian shouting.

I didn’t look back.

I knew this was a bit cruel to Ian.

But better a short pain than a long one. Rather than letting him live in a family that’s united in name only, I’d rather he understand that once certain mistakes are made, they can’t be undone.

I still send York’s parents child support every month-just enough for them to get by.

This is my responsibility to Ian.

But it is nothing more than a responsibility.

I will have no further ties to York, nor will I harbor any emotions toward him.

My life remains as vibrant as ever.

I’ve traveled to many places and seen many different landscapes.

My company has grown steadily and has become a leader in the industry.

I’ve met many new friends-they’re interesting, sincere, and positive.

I’m happy when I’m with them.

Sometimes I think back on the past ten years.

There were moments of sweetness and warmth, but more often than not, there was betrayal and

scheming.

But I have no regrets.

It was precisely those experiences that helped me grow and become stronger. They taught me that a woman can only live beautifully by relying on herself.

They also made me realize that love isn’t everything in life. Independence and self-confidence are a woman’s greatest assets.

Today, I took Ian to the park to fly a kite.

Ian’s kite soared high into the sky,

He laughed, jumped, and shouted, “Mom, look! The kite is flying!”

Watching his joyful expression, a gentle smile spread across my face.

The sunlight bathed us in warmth and beauty.

I know that my future will soar higher and farther, just like this kite.

All those difficult times are now in the past.

And I will keep moving forward, carrying my passion for life and my hopes for the future.

I won’t look back, and I won’t settle.

I will be the sole protagonist of my own life.
