“Now, I’ve got something to tell you. Brace yourself.”

I couldn’t help smiling.

“Another impossible client?”

Lorna shook her finger.

“Not impossible. Just a pain in the ass.”

“Your ex. Graham.”

I paused, just for a beat.

I took a sip of my drink. “Oh.”

Lorna looked a little troubled too.

“I heard he’s been looking for you everywhere for the past two years. Pretty sure he’s coming after you.”

“But the project he’s bringing is seriously tempting.”

Lorna held up a figure.

“I’d love to upgrade to a bigger place, but I’m not some greedy sellout.”

“So it’s up to you. If you don’t want to see him, I’ll turn it down.”

Anyone who made it to the boss’s chair was bound to be a great actor.

I rolled my eyes at her.

“Fine. Go get your dream house.”

“I’ll take the project.”

Her eyes lit up. “Really? You don’t mind?”

Mind?

I looked out the window.

A year ago, I probably would’ve cared.

But now, the name “Graham” only brought one thought to mind-the rich man had come to hand me a check.

“Mind what? Mind the money? I want a big house too.”

We were on the same page.

A week later, the Thorne & Co. delegation landed in Havenport.

They moved so fast you’d think they couldn’t wait to wire the money straight to us.

The conference room door opened. Graham walked in.

Two years had changed him.

He seemed more composed, but there was a cold, hard edge to him now that made him unapproachable.

“Good to see you, Mr. Thorne.”

I held out my hand.

His gaze landed on my face, emotions churning just beneath the surface.

After a long moment, he took my hand, gripping it a little too tightly.

“Good to see you, Ms. Vance.”

I pulled my hand back and gave him a polite smile.

“Let’s get started.”

The meeting lasted nearly two hours.

Graham’s eyes barely left me the entire time.

My coworkers picked up on it and quietly asked what was going on.

I gathered my documents and smiled.

They covered their mouths, shocked, and whispered about it the whole elevator ride.

Then the elevator doors opened.
