The silence was suffocating in the sweltering summer heat.

I had no interest in staying, so I walked down the steps and pulled out my phone to call a ride.

Mira ran after me and slipped her arm through mine.

“Elara, we’re going to club. Come with us?”

“Mr. Thorne’s treating.”

I turned to look at her.

She smiled at me, all sweetness and innocence.

Then I remembered what happened when she first joined the company last year.

She’d messed up a data report and nearly cost the company a major client.

Graham had been furious. He’d chewed out HR so badly they could barely breathe, then demanded Mira be fired.

Rumor had it she cried in Graham’s office all afternoon that day.

Not only did she keep her job—after that, she somehow kept getting handed the best projects.

When the rumors about the two of them were at their worst, I got jealous and confronted Graham.

He rubbed his forehead and answered, calm to the point of cold.

“Jumping to conclusions isn’t like you.”

“I have no intention of replacing you.”

“So there’s no need to make things hard for a fresh graduate.”

Make things hard?

It took me a while to realize what he’d meant.

Mira kept messing up printed documents, so I’d made her redo them three times.

That was when he’d already started taking her side.

So much for keeping our distance to be impartial. He was just playing favorites.

“Do I even know you? Let go.”

Mira’s eyes suddenly turned red.

“Elara, are you mad because I didn’t tell you about dinner tonight?”

“I should’ve thought it through better. Please don’t be mad at me.”

I didn’t want to play along, so I pulled my arm free.

Mira let out a soft cry and fell to the ground, scraping her knee.

Graham’s cold look flickered.

He strode over and crouched beside her.

“Are you hurt?”

Mira bit her lip and shook her head, her eyes red.

Graham turned to me, his voice low and quietly commanding.

“Not telling you about the dinner was my call. If you have a problem with it, talk to me.”

“But taking it out on her? That’s your idea of professionalism?”
