He Vetoed My Promotion for the New Girl Chapter 03

It was true.

In my five years at Thorne & Co., I’d handled dozens of projects, big and small.

Every year, headhunters called offering positions with salaries far above Thorne & Co.’s.

I always turned them down with a smile.

Then I’d turn around and tease Graham.

“See? Your girlfriend’s pretty impressive. You scored big time.”

At first, he’d wrap his arms around me from behind and laugh.

“Yes, yes. I’m a lucky man. Snagged the most amazing girlfriend in the world.”

But when I made the same joke last year, he simply took off his glasses and tossed them aside.

“So?” His gaze was almost cold.

“Why don’t you run the company, then?”

My smile froze.

The humiliation and anger churning in my chest made me want to call one of those headhunters right then and make Graham regret it.

But the next morning, he acted like nothing had happened.

He even went two miles out of his way to buy my favorite chicken pot pie.

All that anger I’d been holding onto just melted away.

Pathetic. A few chicken pot pies and I was over it.

The night breeze dried the tears on my face as I called Lorna Hartley.

Lorna was a friend I’d met through work. She ran a company in Havenport and had made quite a name for herself in the industry.

When she found out I wanted to leave Thorne & Co. and join her, she sounded more surprised than excited.

“What, his company finally go under?”

“I offered you twice the market rate back then, and you still turned me down because of him.”

I said it plain. “We broke up.”

There was a brief silence.

Then she started clapping.

“Well then, congrats to me. I’m about to add a powerhouse to my team.”

“I’ll send you the offer right now. Wait for it!”

Her frantic excitement made me laugh.

But when I looked up and caught my reflection smiling in the glass cabinet, I froze.

Whenever I lost my temper, I’d thought about breaking up with Graham.

But just imagining it had been enough to make my heart ache till I cried.

We’d been together since high school. I couldn’t let go.

Yet now that it had actually happened, I was surprised by how calm I felt.

Like spitting out a piece of gum that’d lost its flavor ages ago.

I put my phone away and was about to call a car home.

Then a cautious voice came from beside me.

“Elara?”

I turned around.

It was Mira.

The coworkers from the dinner were behind her.

Graham stood next to her.

Behind his gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes were cold as he looked at me—like I was an unwelcome intruder.

And right beside me was the shop where he’d once lined up before dawn just so I could have the first taste.
