My Fiancé Married My Long Lost Sister on Our Wedding Day Chapter 09

My soul hovered just below the ceiling. No pain. No resentment. The faces of the five people by the bed were clear–almost unfamiliar.

“Lena?” He touched my nose again. “Don’t scare me.”

My brother shoved him aside. “She’s faked this before. Same thing now.” He slapped my face hard. My head lolled to the side.

Mom’s lips trembled. “Lena, Mom knows you’re upset. Open your eyes. We can talk about the

house tomorrow.”

Sophie pressed into Ethan’s arms. “Is she doing this to get back at me? Today’s my wedding day,

and she has to make such a scene.”

Cold sweat beaded on Ethan’s forehead. He pulled out his phone and started a timer. “We’ll give it five minutes. She’ll wake up when she can’t hold it anymore.”

Three minutes passed. I wasn’t breathing.

Dad finally reached for my neck. The moment his fingers touched my skin, he recoiled like he’d

been burned. “Cold.”

Suddenly, violent pounding came from the door. “Lena Hartman!” My best friend Wendy’s voice cut through. “Open the door! Police and paramedics are here!”

Inside, five faces turned to stone. Sophie yanked my watch off and shoved it into Ethan’s pocket. “They can’t know we took her stuff.” My brother grabbed the agreement from the nightstand. “We’ll say she refused to go to the hospital.”

Ethan stared at my body, throat bobbing. “She said she didn’t feel well at lunch-”

“You all said she was faking!” Mom cut in sharply. “Ethan, you never took her either!”

“Enough!” Dad hissed. “Stick to the story–she collapsed in the room, and we called an ambulance right away.”

The pounding grew louder. Property management arrived with a spare key, and the police rushed

in. Wendy was first. When she saw me, her steps faltered.
The paramedic quickly checked my pupils, carotid pulse, and heartbeat. Ethan followed every move. “She’s just upset. She took four painkillers today–she might be sleeping deeply.”

The doctor looked up. “She’s dead.”

Mom collapsed. Ethan grabbed the doctor’s arm. “Check again. She was just gripping my clothes

“Preliminary time of death: over an hour ago.” The doctor pulled away. “Why didn’t you call for

help sooner?”

Wendy rushed to the bed, took my cold hand, and her tears fell one by one. “She sent me a scheduled email. She said if she went silent, bring the police.”

The officer looked at the locked door, then pulled my watch from Ethan’s pocket. “Who locked the

door?”

No one answered.

“Who took her phone and medication?”

Sophie pointed at Ethan. “He did! He wouldn’t let her leave–wanted to force her to’sign the deed!”

He stared at her in disbelief. “You poured the pills down the drain! You locked the door!”

“Both of you shut up!” My brother’s face was ashen. “Officer, this is family business. We were just trying to talk her into giving the house to her sister.”

Wendy suddenly stood up and handed the officer her phone. “Lena sent me recordings.”

My father’s voice filled the room: “Sign today, or don’t leave this house.” Then Sophie’s: “No one’s taking you to the hospital today.”

The officer reached for his cuffs. “This isn’t family business anymore. Everyone involved, come

with us.”

As the metal clicked shut, Ethan dropped to his knees beside the bed. He pushed up my sleeve and saw the countless needle marks for the first time.
