When I woke, it was dark outside. Laughter from outside–Ethan helping Sophie unwrap wedding gifts. The watch on my wrist could still call emergency services. I’d just dialed the second digit when the door flew open.

Sophie grabbed the watch. “Still trying to call an ambulance? With all the relatives here? You want

to embarrass us?”

“Give it back.”

My arm rose halfway, then fell heavily back onto the bed. Sophie stared at my face something like panic flickered. But she slipped the watch onto her own wrist. “Pretty nice. Consider it your wedding gift to me.”

The door locked again.

I don’t know how long passed. Eventually the living room went quiet. Ethan came in with his arm around Sophie. Mom, Dad, and my brother followed.

“Lena, you haven’t signed yet.” My brother patted my cheek. “Don’t pretend to sleep. The doctor said you were fine last time. You’re just trying to guilt–trip us again.”

But I couldn’t feel any pain anymore.

Ethan sat on the edge of the bed, his voice gentle but weary. “Sophie’s so thoughtful–she even told me to come keep you company. Just sign the papers. Give her the house. We’ll go back to normal.”

Mom tucked Sophie’s shawl. “Your sister came back with nothing. What’s wrong with giving her a

little?”

“Don’t think you can get out of this by lying still,” Dad said coldly.

Sophie sobbed into Ethan’s chest. “Does Lena hate me? Should I give up the house and move out

with Ethan?”

“Don’t talk nonsense.” Ethan held her tighter, then turned to me. “Lena, is this what you want? To make Sophie homeless?”

The bed didn’t answer. He reached out and nudged my shoulder. “Don’t be difficult.”

My arm slid off the edge, hanging limp. He frowned and touched his fingers to my nose.

Then he went rigid at the bedside.
