But the clerk hadn’t done anything wrong. I paid the balance, changed back into my own clothes, and walked out of the hotel.

My brother’s car was parked at the bottom of the steps. He rolled down the window and nodded toward the back seat.

“Get in.”

“I need to go to the hospital.”

“Today’s the first meal the whole family’s had together since Sophie came home. Don’t ruin it.”

He pushed the door open from inside. When I didn’t move, he frowned. “Lena, even if Ethan lied to you, he was just getting even for Sophie. You owe her ten years. One wedding—is it really worth running away over?”

When I was sick as a kid, he’d carried me on his back for three blocks. Sweat pouring down his face, he’d still smiled and said I was lighter than his schoolbag. Now, he couldn’t even be bothered to get out of the car to help me.

“Marcus, I’m really not well.”

“You’ve always been like this—headaches every time something doesn’t go your way.” His tone softened slightly. “Be a good girl. I’ll take you to the hospital after dinner, okay?”

That “be a good girl” sounded just like the old days. Some leftover hope made me get in.

The car didn’t go to our parents’ house. It stopped at Ethan’s new apartment. A white ribbon wreath hung on the door. Two pairs of matching slippers sat in the entryway—his size and Sophie’s.

In the living room, Mom was helping Sophie take off her veil. “You must be exhausted wearing this all day. Let Mom rub your neck.” Dad was packing wedding favors into boxes. When he saw me, he barely glanced up. “Finally here. Put the dress on—the photographer needs a family portrait.”

“Why do I need to wear a wedding dress?”

Sophie wrapped her arm around Ethan’s, smiling happily. “I’ll wear the main dress. Lena can wear the bridesmaid style. That way everyone can tell she’s really wishing me well.”

The dizziness came again. I grabbed the shoe cabinet for support. My bag slipped, the medical folder half-exposed.
