After York and Faye were sent to prison, the burden of supporting the family fell on York’s parents.

The elderly couple was advanced in age and had no source of income, yet they still had to care for

Ian, so they were struggling financially.

Before long, York’s mother called me. Her voice choked with emotion as she asked if I could help.

I didn’t refuse.

After all, Ian is my son, and I couldn’t stand by and watch him suffer alongside his grandparents.

I made an agreement with the two elderly people to give them enough living expenses for their

daily needs on the 10th of every month.

I also told them that this money was for Ian and had nothing to do with York and Faye.

The two elders thanked me profusely, saying I was a good person.

I just felt that this was what a mother should do.

A year later, my company was thriving. I became more composed and confident.

I took up flower arranging, fitness, and travel, making my life colorful.

People around me tried to set me up with potential partners, but I politely declined them all.

It’s not that I don’t believe in love. I just feel that my life is good as it is.

I enjoy the freedom of being alone, without having to accommodate anyone else.

Occasionally, I go to see Ian.

He’s growing up and becoming more mature. He initiates conversations with me and takes my hand, asking me to play with him.

He asks me when Dad and Faye will come back.

I tell him they’ll come back once they realize their mistake.

He seems to understand, then hugs me and says, “Mom, I miss you.”

Every time I hear those words, my heart melts.

I hold him close and tell him, “Mommy misses you too. Mommy will always be here for you.”

That day, after wrapping up work, I was getting ready to go to the gym.

As soon as I stepped outside the office building, I spotted a familiar figure.

It was Faye.

She had been released from prison.

Because of her good behavior, she was released early.

She had lost a lot of weight, was wearing a set of clothes washed until they were faded, and her hair was a mess-she no longer looked like she used to.

As soon as she saw me, she rushed over and grabbed my arm.

“Kayla, please help me,” she said hoarsely, her voice pleading. “I’m penniless right now-I don’t even have a place to stay. Give me some money so I can survive.”

I pushed her hand away and kept my distance.

“Why should I help you?” I looked at her, my tone flat.

“I know I was wrong, I really do,” she said, crying. “I shouldn’t have been with York. I shouldn’t have schemed against you, and I shouldn’t have stolen Eliot’s company secrets. I was wrong. Will you forgive me?”

“Forgive you?” I chuckled lightly. “What about me?”

“My ten-year marriage betrayed, all those days I was manipulated, the agony of nearly losing

everything?”

Faye couldn’t speak. she just kept crying.

“I have no obligation to help you,” I said.

“Just go. Don’t ever come looking for me again.”

With that, I turned and walked away.

Faye shouted after me, calling me heartless and ruthless.

I didn’t look back.

Being heartless toward her was being kind to myself.

I knew that once Faye got out of prison, she would definitely go looking for Eliot.

Before long, someone told me she had gone to Eliot’s company and was kneeling there, begging him to take her back. She said she knew she was wrong and wanted to start over with him.

Eliot had security drag her away on the spot and said he’d call the police if she ever came back.

Faye got nothing, and she never dared to look for him again.

After that, I never heard from her again.

Some said she left the city to find work elsewhere.

Others said she was still here, living in poverty.

I didn’t care, because it had nothing to do with me.
