You Want Him? Take Him! But I’m Keeping All the Assets Chapter 05

Faye’s birthday party was held at a private estate on the outskirts of town.

I took the invitation I’d found in York’s study, slipped into a simple black evening gown, and drove

there alone.

The estate was ablaze with lights, bustling with elegantly dressed guests.

I stood in the shadows of a corner, watching Faye in the center of the ballroom.

With a radiant smile, she wore a long red dress and had her makeup done to perfection, looking

every bit the queen.

York was wearing the suit I’d ironed for him that morning, standing beside her with Ian by his side.

They standing together looked just like a happy family of three.

People around us were already whispering.

“Isn’t that York? Who’s the woman next to him? She’s so beautiful.”

“Looks like Faye, the former cheerleader captain. I heard she just got back from abroad.”

“Isn’t York married? I remember his wife was our classmate, Kayla?”

“Look at them. Kayla’s probably out of the picture now.”

Listening to these whispers, I remained impassive as I raised a glass of champagne and took a light

sip.

Just then, someone asked Faye.

“Faye, didn’t you marry Eliot and move abroad? Why did you come back on your own?”

The smile on Faye’s face faded for a moment, and she immediately adopted a perfectly measured

look of vulnerability.

“I was naive. I thought love was everything. After I married Eliot, he… he started drinking and even

got violent.”

As she spoke, her eyes began to well up. York immediately put her arm around her shoulder and whispered words of comfort.

A chorus of sympathetic murmurs rose from the crowd.

Faye wiped the corner of her eye and continued.

“I just couldn’t take it anymore, so I divorced him and came back. Thankfully… York was still

there.”

She looked at York with a look of complete reliance.

York clasped her hand tightly, then looked up at the room, his voice low and pained.

“Actually… my marriage to Kayla had long since reached its end.”

“All these years, she’s been paranoid, suspecting me of having an affair with every woman I met.’

“If I worked late, she suspected I was cheating. If I had dinner with a female client, she suspected I was having an affair. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I brought up divorce, but she refused to agree. She even threatened to kill herself…”

“My God, how did Kayla turn out like this?”

“That’s terrifying. She’s crazy, isn’t she?”

“Poor York-what a tragedy to be stuck with a woman like that.”

The murmurs around me grew louder, and everyone looked at me with a mix of sympathy and

contempt.

Yes, they had spotted me.

I felt those stares, and my heart remained calm.

Faye walked up to me gracefully, but her tone was condescending.

“Kayla, for the sake of our long friendship as classmates, I advise you to let go. York doesn’t love you anymore. If you keep clinging to him, you’ll only make things more embarrassing for yourself.”

“If you agree to the divorce, York will give you a share of the assets-enough for you to get by.”

I looked at York.

“Is that what you think, too?”

York avoided my gaze, his voice low.

“Kayla, let’s part ways amicably. I’m really tired.’

“Mom, please leave Dad alone!” Ian ran over too, tugging at the hem of my shirt. His little face full of reproach. “Faye is so nice to Dad, and to me too. Can’t you be as gentle as Faye?”

I looked at this child I had given birth to and raised for five years. He was now looking at me with disdain, siding with someone else to blame me.

The last shred of warmth in my heart vanished completely.

I took a deep breath, looked at York and Faye, and spoke clearly and calmly.

“I agree to the divorce.”

Smiles instantly spread across York and Faye’s faces. Those smiles held smugness, relief, and the

air of victors.

But the next second, I continued,

“But I want York to leave with nothing.”
