You Want Him? Take Him! But I’m Keeping All the Assets Chapter 02

The next morning, sunlight streamed in through the cracks in the curtains.

York was already awake, lying on his side and watching me. When he saw my eyes open, he reached out to ruffle my hair. His voice still hoarse from just waking up.

“Awake?”

“Mm-hmm.” I pretended I’d just remembered something and spoke casually, as if by chance. “The class chat blew up last night. Faye’s back in the country and wants to get together this weekend. Are you going?”

York paused for a moment, then rolled over onto his back, staring at the ceiling.

“I’m not going.”

“Why?” I propped myself up to look at him. “Back then, you two…”

He cut me off, turning his head to look at me, his gaze calm.

“There’s no reason to go.”

“It’s all in the past. Besides, it wouldn’t be fun anyway—a bunch of people pretending to be close when they’re not, just blowing each other up. It’s exhausting.”

I didn’t say anything, waiting for him to continue.

He reached out and pulled me into his arms, resting his chin on the top of my head, his voice muffled.

“You shouldn’t go either.”

“Ian has a dance exam this weekend, so someone needs to be there with him. If you go, who’s going to take care of him?”

I leaned against him, listening to his steady heartbeat. After a few seconds of silence, I said softly,

“You’re right. Then I won’t go.”

York held me tighter and kissed my forehead. “Good girl.”

On Friday night, York came home earlier than usual.

During dinner, he speared a piece of chicken breast for me with his fork, his tone gentle.

“I have to work overtime this weekend. We’re rushing to meet a project deadline.”

I paused with my fork and looked up at him.

“Both days this weekend?”

“Yeah, I’ll probably be busy until pretty late.” He nodded, then added, “I’ll drop Ian off at my parents’ place tomorrow morning and have them watch him for a couple of days. Have a good rest this weekend. You’ve been working so hard taking care of him.”

I looked at his usual gentle expression and nodded with a smile.

But that last shred of hope in my heart gradually faded away.

“Okay, take care of yourself.”

York looked at me with a tender gaze.

“You’re always thoughtful.”

Early Saturday morning, York got up on tiptoe.

I kept my eyes closed, pretending to sleep, and felt him lean down to kiss my cheek, tuck the blanket around me, and then tiptoe out the door.

Hearing the door close in the entryway, I opened my eyes.

Ten minutes later, I got dressed, put on a hat and a mask, and hailed a taxi to catch up with York’s car.

His car didn’t head toward the office, but instead drove toward the upscale club district in the eastern part of the city.

It finally stopped at the entrance of a private club.

I told the driver to pull over. Through the car window, I watched York get out.

Then I saw Faye.

She was wearing a red dress, her long hair cascading down her shoulders, standing at the entrance of the club with a radiant smile.

Ten years had passed, yet she seemed not to have changed a bit—she’s still the same bright and outgoing cheerleader captain she was back then.

They walked toward each other. Faye naturally slipped her arm through his, looked up at him with a smile, and said something.

York lowered his head to listen. The contours of his profile were the gentle ones I knew so well.

Then, Faye released his arm and embraced him.

York froze for a moment, but didn’t push her away.

They embraced there, like a couple reunited after a long separation.

I sat in the taxi watching the scene unfold, feeling completely at peace.

That last shred of ridiculous hope had finally been extinguished.

I took out my phone, pointed it at the two of them, and pressed the shutter button.

“Sir, to the law firm.”
