He Gave Her My Kitchen. I Took Everything Chapter 12

I didn’t answer.

She came anyway.

Two weeks later, at 10:15 on a Tuesday morning, my hostess buzzed up and said there was a woman in the lobby applying for the dishwasher position, and she’d asked for me by name.

I came down.

I almost walked past her.

The scar ran from her hairline to her jaw on the left side, silvered and raised. She wore her hair pulled forward to cover it, which didn’t work. She had a folder in her hands and she was holding it exactly the way she used to

hold her phone.

Twenty-five years old. Blacklisted from every kitchen in three states. Forty-one plaintiffs had named her personally in the civil suit.

“Nora.” Her voice was smaller than I remembered. “Chef. + heard you were hiring dish.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

I want to tell you I felt pity. Mostly I felt tired.

Because I remembered a courtroom, in a life that only exists in my head, where this woman sat in a blue dress and told twelve strangers that I was erratic about temperatures. She was so calm. She had a tissue she

never used.

She’d have done it again in this life, if Grant hadn’t found her in that parking lot first.

Daniel appeared at my shoulder – he must have been watching the lobby camera. He had his phone in his hand already.

“Say the word,” he said quietly. “HR sends the application back and she never comes here again.”

Sienna’s chin started to shake.

“Nora, I’m sorry,” she said. “I know what I said about you. I know what I did. I was – ” she gave a wet, awful laugh” – I was so sure you were just some tired old woman standing in my way.”

“I know,” I said.

“I read the binder,” she said. “After. In the parking lot of my mom’s place. I read the whole thing.” Her voice

cracked. “You wrote a note in tab five. It said, if the compressor alarms, call me, any hour. You left me your cell number. After everything I did to you, you left me your number.”

adn’t remembered writing that.

But of course I had. That’s who I was, even at the very end. That’s who I’d always been, and it had cost me a

life.

“Sienna.” I kept my voice even. “I’m not hiring you. Not because I want to punish you – because I have thirty-two cooks upstairs who have to trust that the person next to them will tell the truth when it goes wrong.

You can’t give them that.”

She nodded fast, staring at the floor.

“But I’m not blacklisting you either,” I said. “You’re twenty-five. Go somewhere nobody knows your name. Start on dish. Do it for three years with your mouth shut and your logs perfect, and one day you might be worth something.” I paused. “And Sienna? When you finally get an assistant of your own read what they hand you.

She stood there a second longer, then whispered “thank you,” and walked out into the sunlight.

Daniel put his phone away.

“That was more generous than I’d have been,” he said.

“It wasn’t generosity.” I watched the door swing shut. “I just don’t want to spend one more hour of my life on

either of them.”

That night, I did something I hadn’t done in two lifetimes.

I went home at seven o’clock.

I opened a bottle of wine that I didn’t taste for acidity. I put my grandmother’s copper pot on the stove and made one pan of scrambled eggs for one person – soft, slow, twelve minutes, unbelievably good – and ate them standing at my own counter in a quiet apartment I paid for by myself.

And then my phone rang.

The screen said: Charleston Correctional Facility – Inmate Call.

I stood there for three long seconds with the fork in my hand.

Then I pressed decline, blocked the number, and finished my eggs.

Except an hour later, an envelope arrived at the restaurant by courier.

Handwritten. His writing. And inside, one page that started:

Nora – before you throw this away, I need to tell you what I found in the storage unit.
