The Godfather Who Never Lost Begged Me Not to Leave Him Chapter 08

By the time I checked the family group chat, more than a hundred messages had piled up.

Big news. Don Leander wiped his social media clean. Everything’s gone. Not a trace of Cressida

anywhere.”

“I heard Cressida can’t even get onto Rossetti property now. The Soldiers stop her at the gate. She’s

tried a few times and gotten turned away every time.”

A string of reaction memes followed.

“Men are ruthless. When they love you, they’ll hold up the sky for you. When they don’t, they’re the

first ones to tear it down.”

A few messages later, someone replied, “Oh, please. That’s not ruthlessness. Cressida threw herself at him and got exactly what was coming to her.”

“Oh, and Don Leander posted something new. He said he’s married, and the only reason he never made his wife’s identity public was to protect her.”

“His wife didn’t want Cressida around, so he cut Cressida off completely. Looking at it that way, maybe Don Leander loves his wife more after all.”

I locked my phone. The screen went dark, and I didn’t read another word.

Early spring was almost here, and the weather couldn’t make up its mind.

Near the end of the workday, a hard wind picked up, cold enough to feel like midwinter again.

One of the family members I was close to even joked that it might snow by midnight.

I pulled my coat tighter as I headed downstairs. At the corner, footsteps came up behind me.

“Rissa.”

Leander draped his trench coat over my

shoulders.

“…I was passing by.”

His headquarters and mine were in opposite directions.

I stopped him when he tried to pull the coat closed around me. His voice tightened. “I just came to bring you something warm. You always get sick when the weather turns in early spring.”

“No.” I cut him off, pulled off the coat, and handed it back. “I can take care of myself. You don’t need

to do this.”

“If you have time for this, use it to sign the divorce papers.”

His fingers tightened around the coat. After a moment, he said, “Rissa, Cressida and I…”

“That’s between the two of you.” I cut him off and turned toward my car.

My driver was already waiting at the curb. I got in without looking back.

The next day, it was fully dark by the time I got home.

As I got closer, I noticed a car parked outside. Leander was leaning against it with an insulated bag

in one hand.

He straightened when he saw me.

“I brought you something to eat.”

“I saw your post saying you were busy, so I had the staff make soup and brought it over.”

I stopped a few steps away.

Whenever I used to work late, I’d have the staff make hot soup. Cream of mushroom or minestrone.

A bowl of it could take the edge off even the longest day.

I shook my head. “No, thanks. If I want soup, I can ask my own staff to make it.”

His fingers tightened around the bag’s handle.

“Aren’t you busy?” I asked. “I heard your family’s negotiating new territory. Some of your people

are practically pulling all-nighters.”

Leander was the one who kept the whole operation under control.

Whenever the family expanded, he usually oversaw every detail himself.

He was quiet for a moment. “I am busy. But I missed you,”

He stepped closer.

Only then did I see how exhausted he looked. He clearly hadn’t slept much in days.

I let out a quiet sigh.

“My attorney says you still won’t sign the divorce agreement. Is the property split the problem?”

His expression darkened. “I don’t want a divorce.”

“I’ve fixed everything. Cressida is completely out of my life. I won’t have any contact with her

again.”

He moved closer, his gaze fixed on me.

“Nerissa, I’m sorry. And someday… we can have another child.”

I drew a slow breath.

“We won’t have another child.”

His breath caught.

“Even if nothing had happened on New Year’s Eve, our marriage wouldn’t have lasted.”
