The moment I arrived at the office the next morning, I could tell something was off.

My coworkers lowered their heads and whispered among themselves whenever they saw me.

But the second I got close, they all went silent.

I pushed down the uneasy feeling in my chest and decided to resign first.

I knocked twice and stepped into Adrian’s office.

He had his back to me and was on the phone.

“Me and her? No way. Tessa’s just an assistant.”

“She’s average-looking, and her work isn’t anything special either. I don’t think much of her, and she’s not right for me.”

“Those articles are completely false. You know I’ve always been against office romances.”

“I’m married to Celeste now. What is there left to worry about?”

Adrian turned around with a smile still on his face.

The second he saw me, it froze.

He quickly ended the call and turned to explain.

“Tessa, don’t get the wrong idea.”

“That was Celeste’s father, Mr. Grant.”

“He saw an article yesterday implying there was something going on between us, so he called to ask about it.”

“I only said those things for your own good.”

I let out a cold laugh.

“For my own good?”

“So protecting me means tearing me down?”

Seeing that I was genuinely angry, Adrian hurried toward me.

“No. That’s not what I meant.”

“I only said it to put Mr. Grant at ease.”

“Celeste and I are filing for divorce this afternoon. Once that’s done, I’ll be able to marry you.”

“But for now… I need you to put up with this.”

He handed me a document.

I looked up sharply and stared at him in disbelief.

“You’re firing me?”

Adrian looked troubled.

“I don’t have a choice.”

“Didn’t you see the news this morning?”

“I don’t know where the reporters got those photos, but they even found pictures from the last time I went with you to the hospital for an IV.”

“If I don’t fire you now, no one will take the no-dating policy I created seriously anymore.”

Adrian sighed and pushed a pen into my hand.

“Tessa, you don’t want me to lose credibility at the company, do you?”

“Just sign it.”

“It’s better for both of us.”

My hand trembled around the pen.

I looked up at him, fighting back tears.

“What about my dignity?”

“Did you ever stop to think about what happens to me after I get fired for something like this?”

Adrian smiled, clearly not taking my words seriously.

Then he casually reached out to wipe the tear at the corner of my eye.

“You?”

“I’ll take care of you.”

I turned my face away before he could touch me.

I didn’t argue anymore.

I lowered my head and signed the termination notice.

Then I packed my things into a cardboard box and left my desk.

This time, my coworkers didn’t even bother lowering their voices.

They talked loudly behind my back.

“Finally. The homewrecker’s gone. The air already feels cleaner.”

“And she actually showed up in a veil to congratulate them.”

“Like no one could tell what she was trying to do.”

“She couldn’t get Mr. Vale to choose her, and now she’s probably furious.”

“She even paid the media to run those misleading stories.”

“Mr. Vale went to the hospital with her once, and suddenly she wanted everyone to believe he was in love with her.”

“If he really loved her, why would he kick her out of the company?”

“What a joke.”

They burst into laughter again.

I fought back my tears.

Keeping my head down, I quickened my pace.

I had barely gone a few steps when someone slammed a shoulder into me on purpose.

My heel slipped.

I fell hard to the floor.

Everything in my box spilled out and scattered around me.

Before I could even struggle back to my feet, a soft, delicate voice spoke first.

“Tessa, don’t you watch where you’re going?”
