Panic, sudden and sharp. clawed at his chest-an emotion that immediately curdled into irritation.

That’s nonsense, he snapped. She staged it herself. She can’t be dead.”

He replied casually, as if trying to calm his own nerves.

Chloe glanced at him secretly, her brows furrowed with dissatisfaction.

She tugged gently at his sleeve, pouting slightly. “Sebastian, don’t overthink it. It’s probably just another one of Lena’s

pathetic attempts to get your attention.”

“My stomach hurts, she added. Please take me to the hospital quickly-I’m worried about our baby…”

At her words, the unease in his heart faded.

His gaze was pulled back to the water. It lay calm now, deceptively serene. He stared at that blank expanse for a long.

Then he turned and hurried away, leaving a quick instruction for his assistant: “Stay here. When she’s had enough of her

games, send her home.”

Chloe hid her glee, resting her head on his chest and smiling faintly.

“Lena, I hope you’re dead, she thought. Never come back.”

“If you do survive and return, I’ll find someone to finish you off for good!”

The sea remained calm, no longer rippling-only the sea breeze blowing gently.

At the private hospital, Sebastian, in a fit of anxious overreaction, had essentially commandeered the entire maternity

wing for Chloe’s exclusive examination.

In the corridor, nurses huddled in groups whispering, every word dripping with contempt.

“Who’s making such a fuss, one asked. Is it Mrs. Montgomery-the sole heir to the Carter fortune?”

“Please, another scoffed. She’s clearly a homewrecker. Wearing a crown doesn’t make her a queen”

Every hissed syllable from the corridor slithered under the door and reached Chloe’s ears Her fingers twisted in the

sterile hospital sheets, nails biting into the cotton. Rage, hot and humiliating, burned behind her eyes.

Looking at the man standing in front of her, lost in thought, she fumed with anger

“Sebastian, they’re mocking me, she said bitterly. When are you going to give me a real identity?

The man said nothing.

When his silence stretched on, she snapped. “I’m carrying your child!” she shrieked, the last vestiges of composure gone

“You said you didn’t love that washed-up wife of yours anymore! You promised you’d marry me

The man’s gaze fell on her. He frowned, fearing she might harm the baby, and stepped forward to pull her into his arms

“Let’s not talk about this now, he said. Rest well.”

“I have some work to handle at the company. I’ll be back later.”

With that, he let go and walked out of the ward-clean and decisive.

Watching his indifferent retreat, Chloe flew into a rage, smashing everything within reach and screaming.

“Sebastian! Come back!”

Outside the ward, he leaned against the corridor wall and rubbed his temples.

A wave of unease and irritability welled up inside him.

He pulled out his phone and, on impulse, opened his chat with Lena. Their last conversation had been about the divorce.

He typed several messages, then deleted them.

Frustrated, he typed again and sent two texts:

“Where are you? Had enough of your games-come home. Tomorrow’s father’s birthday. I’ll take you to the ancestral

home.”

There’s a limit to how far you can take this act, he added. We’re still married. You should at least tell me where you are

For the first time in ages, he waited patiently for her reply. Ten minutes passed, and there was no response.

Sebastian was consumed by intense unease. She’d never taken this long to reply before-not even during fights. This was

wrong.

Ding.

His phone rang-not a reply from Lena, but a breaking news alert.

[Unidentified woman found at LA Harbor today. A valuable diamond ring recovered at the scene]

His finger, gone clumsy and cold, tapped to enlarge the grainy news photo. The world narrowed to the pixelated image

on his screen. A high-pitched ringing filled his ears, drowning out all other sound.

In disbelief, he pulled a ring from his pocket and matched the design.

It was Lena’s ring!

His voice trembled: “No… That can’t be!”

He panicked and dialed his assistant: “Where is she! Haven’t you found her yet?”

“Sir, I’ve been here the whole time.” the assistant’s voice was strained. The coast guard came. They’ve been searching

Mrs Montgomery… she wasn’t…”
