Too Late for Regret My Biased Family Begged for Mercy While I Embraced My Billionaire Husband Chapter 08

Days passed.

My injuries slowly healed.

Kael took me to my follow-up appointment. The doctor said I was recovering well.

But I still couldn’t do heavy exercise or lift anything heavy.

I memorized every word.

The so-called relatives were all shut down by Kael.

A few times, my phone rang with unknown numbers.I answered.

It was Aunt Jean.

“Elara, your mom’s been crying for days. Go home and see her.”

“Jax’s not entirely to blame. You’re his big sister…”

I hung up.

Later, I just turned my phone off.

Finally the world fell silent.

But some things you can’t just cut off.

A month later, I visited Mara’s place.

As soon as I walked in, I could tell something was wrong.

I asked, “What’s wrong?”

Mara hesitated, then sat me down.

“Elara, I need to tell you something. But don’t overthink it.”

I nodded.

Mara sighed. “Something happened to your family.”

“Lila owes a ton of money in payday loans. We don’t know the exact amount, but collectors have

been to the house several times.”

She lowered her voice.

“She’s in hiding. No one can reach her.”

“Your dad had such a bad stress reaction he was hospitalized. His blood pressure spiked to over

The doctor said he could’ve died if they’d been later.”
She glanced at me.

“Jax got it worse. When the collectors came, he fought them. He got pushed and fell down the stairs. His leg is broken.”

I stared, stunned.

“Now your mom’s alone. She has to take care of your dad, Jax, and deal with the collectors.”

Mara shook her head. “She’s lost so much weight. It breaks my heart.”

I lifted my water glass and took a sip.

Mara looked at me. “Elara, what are you thinking?”

I set the glass down.

“I’m not thinking anything.”

Mara didn’t push it. She just said, “Whatever you decide, I’m on your side.”

I stood outside Mara’s house for a long time, wind blowing in my face.

Not long after, Mom found me.

She’d lost so much weight. Her hair was streaked with gray.

When she saw me, her eyes lit up.

She hurried over.

“Elara.”

I stopped and looked at her.

Her lips trembled. Tears filled her eyes first.

“How… how are you doing?”

I didn’t answer. I asked, “How did you find me here?”

She looked down.

“Elara, I know you don’t want to see me, but…”

She couldn’t finish. Tears fell.

“What do you want?”

She sniffled and pulled a plastic bag from behind her back.

“I brought you something you loved as a kid. Brown sugar muffins. I made them this morning. They’re still warm.”

I didn’t take it.

Her hand hung in the air. Her expression crumbled.

Her voice shook.

“Elara, I’m sorry.”

“We’re not mad about Jax anymore. The necklace thing is over. Just… come home, okay? Your dad…

he…”

She paused. Tears poured down.

“Your dad’s in the hospital. He wants to see you.”

“The doctor said his blood pressure is too high. Another shock could kill him.”

“Elara, please… take pity on me. Just come see him once?”

I stared at the bag of muffins. Memories flooded back.

When I was little, I watched Lila and Jax eat brown sugar muffins.

Mom always said, “Your stomach’s too sensitive. You can’t digest them.”

Later I learned it wasn’t that I couldn’t eat them.

They just didn’t want to give me any.

My voice was cold. “I’m not coming.”

Mom burst into tears.

“Elara, how did you become like this? He’s your real dad!”

I looked at her.

“Did he ever know I was his real daughter?”

“When I broke two ribs, what did he say? He said I hadn’t learned enough of a lesson.”

Mom opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

I turned to leave. “Just go.”

She suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Elara, please. Jax’s leg is broken. Lila’s gone. Your dad’s in the hospital. I can’t do this alone.”

I looked down at her hand.

It was rough, nails dirty.

Once, that hand only peeled apples and shrimp for Lila and Jax.

Never for me.

I pulled my arm away.

“You only think of me when you’re desperate?”

“When you were beating me half to death, did you ever think of me?”
