On the day I left the hospital, Mom, Dad, and Lila blocked my way.

They cried and begged.

“Elara, Jax is your little brother! Are you really going to send him to jail?”

“His whole life will be ruined!”

I didn’t even look at them. “He deserves it.”

“When you do wrong, you pay the price.”

Mom and Dad cried harder.

“You can’t do this! Please, for our sake, let him go!”

“We’re begging you-we’ll get on our knees, okay!”

They started to kneel.

Lila stopped them.

She pointed at me, yelling.

“Elara, do you have no conscience?”

“Mom and Dad gave you life and raised you. This is how you repay them?”

“You’d better smarten up and go tell the police to let Jax go.”

Passersby slowed down and stared, whispering.

“What’s going on? Why are they trying to kneel?”

“I heard that girl’s their daughter. Something about making her parents beg.”

“There’s no need for them to kneel like this.She looks nice but she’s pretty heartless, making her

parents kneel!”

Some people argued back.

“You don’t know. Maybe the parents did something unforgivable.”

“Not all parents are good.”

“Look at the girl with them-she’s clearly spoiled. If they’re both their daughters, this one didn’t have it easy.”

“They don’t even look like they’re from the same family.”

I glanced at myself in a reflection window. I looked pale and thin.

Nothing like Lila, dressed nicely, healthy and cared for.

We were from two different worlds.

Kael came back from getting my things and immediately stepped in front of me.

“Kneel if you want. No settlement. No way out.”

All three of them turned pale with rage.

Mom sobbed, clutching her chest.

“I can’t live like this!”

“How did I raise such an ungrateful child?”

“Elara, you’re so cruel.”

Dad snapped, “Elara, are you trying to kill your mother and me?”

“You ungrateful daughter.”

Lila cried along with them. “Mom, Dad, we’ll find another way. Don’t hurt yourselves.”

Kael held me and walked away.

All I heard behind me were their hysterical screams.
