They shouted at Kael, angry and accusatory.

“How dare you hit him! We’re calling the police!”

Kael’s voice was cold.

“Call them.”

“I want to see who they arrest.”

“Do you even deserve to be her parents?!”

Dad went silent immediately.

Mom snapped, “This is our family matter.”

“We can discipline our own daughter. Who are you to interfere?”

I gathered every last bit of strength and spoke low.

“We’re not family anymore!”

“You don’t even deserve to have me!”

After saying that, I ran out of strength and passed out.

At the hospital, Kael stayed by my side.

When I woke up, his tense face finally relaxed.

“Elara, I called the police.”

“Jax was taken into custody.”

Just then, Mom, Dad, and Lila’s voices came from the hallway.

“Let us in.”

“Why can’t we see our own daughter?”

“Elara, Mom and Dad are here.”

Kael ignored them and went on. “They tried to settle. I said no.’

“Elara, I can’t imagine what would’ve happened if I’d gotten there later.”

His voice cracked.

“The doctor said two of your ribs are broken. You’ll need at least six months to recover.”

“It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have let you come back alone.”

I suddenly remembered and looked at him.

“Wait… why did you come?”

He looked guilty. “I heard something was off on the phone yesterday. I drove right over.”

“I still got here too late…”

I squeezed his hand.

“You didn’t.”

“You made me see this family clearly.”

“I don’t want to settle. I want them to pay.”

Kael gave me a reassuring look. “Leave it to me.”
