My Fiancé Sided With His Mischievous Childhood Friend, Until My Mother‑In‑Law Burst In Chapter 02

My Fiancé Sided With His Mischievous Childhood Friend, Until My Mother‑In‑Law Burst In Chapter 02

I barely recognized the woman in the mirror.

Almost all my hair was gone, leaving my head unevenly cropped. Several patches were noticeably shorter than the rest, with several areas looking irritated from whatever she’d done.

My skin felt sore around my ears and the back of my neck, and some unpleasant-smelling cream had been rubbed there, making the discomfort even worse.

I stared at my reflection, my hands and feet turning cold.

Chloe sat on the couch holding a pair of pink electric clippers. When I stepped out of the bathroom, she waved them at me.

“You’re awake.”

My lips trembled. “What did you do to me?”

“Gave you a new look.” She shrugged.

“Every bride wants to stand out now. The second you walk in tomorrow, no one will ever forget you.”

Two bridesmaids covered their mouths and laughed.

One of them aimed her phone at me. “This is incredible. A bald bride. So avant-garde.”

I instinctively raised my hands to hide my face.

Madison Clark laughed even harder. “Why are you covering your face? You can’t hide your head.”

The room erupted.

I stood rooted to the spot, blood roaring in my ears.

I wanted to scream at them, snatch the phone from Madison’s hand, and throw those clippers across the room. But my throat seemed to close, trapping every word inside me.

I had been that way since I was a child. The angrier I became, the less I could speak.

Chloe knew that better than anyone.

She rose and came toward me, reaching for my head. “Let me feel it. You really do look like a sphynx cat.”

I jerked backward and slammed my lower back into the sink.

A sharp wave of discomfort shot through my head, and tears spilled from my eyes.

Chloe returned to the couch at her leisure and called Ethan. She put him on speaker.

“Ethan, you’d better come upstairs. Lily seems upset.”

He sounded exhausted. “What happened?”

Chloe sighed. “I was fooling around and gave her a new hairstyle. Then she started crying. She’s kind of scaring me.”

I lunged for the phone.

Chloe hid it behind her back and deliberately raised her voice. “Calm down. I already told you I didn’t mean to.”

My entire body shook. “You did mean to.”

Ten minutes later, Ethan pushed open the door.

The instant he saw me, his expression changed. His brows drew together, and shock flashed in his eyes.

I thought he would be furious. At the very least, I thought he would ask whether I was hurt.

But Chloe reached him first and clutched his sleeve.

“Ethan, I swear I didn’t mean it. I just wanted the wedding to be special. Please don’t yell at me. You know that scares me.”

Ethan looked down at her.

Something in my heart went cold because he didn’t pull away.

He merely sighed, sounding more exasperated than angry. “How did you let another joke go this far?”

When Ethan and I got married at City Hall, Chloe posted, [Someone stole my Ethan.] He had called that a joke too.

Now she had shaved my head while I slept on the eve of our wedding.

To him, that was still just a joke.
