The charges were embezzlement and intentional assault.

With the evidence Nikki provided, fraud was added to the list as well.

Dad didn’t apply for bail.

After spending a few days locked up, Kaysen finally dropped his attitude and started writing letters

from the detention center.

He wrote page after page.

He said he knew he was wrong.

He claimed that because our parents weren’t around much when he was growing up, he just wanted companionship, hoping I could understand him.

He even added that since we were brother and sister, all it took was one word from me for him to get out early, promising he would make it up to me in the future.

I folded the letter neatly and slid it underneath the bottom corner of my desk.

Dad recalculated the allowance for the past six months and transferred the entire sum into my bank

account.

Mom started visiting me every day.

Sometimes she came in the morning with breakfast.

Other times she arrived in the afternoon to accompany me to my follow–up appointments.

Once, while peeling an apple for me, she suddenly stopped mid–motion.

“Oaklee, when you had that stomach bleeding and went through the discharge process all by yourself… were you in a lot of pain?”

“I was fine,” I said.

She set down the apple and the knife.

After a long silence, she broke down in tears again. “I’m so sorry, Oaklee.”

The treatment plan was long.

Managing a chronic illness takes time, and my stomach needed careful recovery.

The doctor mentioned it would take at least three months.

Every time Mom came along, she carefully typed the doctor’s instructions into her phone notes

When I was discharged and returned to campus, my classmates actually stood up and welcomed me

back.

I froze for a moment before thanking them.

The professors gathered the missed course materials and sent them over.

I told them there was no rush and that I would catch up step by step.

One by one, I left all the part–time job group chats.

I arranged my textbooks back on the desk. Life felt like it was finally turning a corner.

My life had swung from one extreme straight into another.

One afternoon, I received a court summons.

Kaysen had applied for bail through a lawyer, threatening to counter–sue me for defamation, claiming I had fabricated evidence out of malice.

I read the summons several times, opened my photo gallery, and backed up every piece of evidence

to the cloud.

After sending everything to Dad’s lawyer, I set my phone down and went back to studying.
