After Five Years of Lies, I Left the Family and Made Them Regret It Chapter 07

But every time Adrian saw me struggling to walk because of the damage to my left leg, he was

reminded of his betrayal.

He remembered Serena’s pregnancy, and how he had agreed with my parents to lie to me in order

to protect the Bennett family’s recognised blood heir and preserve the Moretti bloodline.

Every time he saw the damage the crash had left behind, he was forced to remember exactly what

he had done.

He couldn’t face it.

So, little by little, he started calling his guilt “responsibility“, and Serena’s dependence on him “love“.

In Montreal, Serena waited for him to make the decisions, and Noah would reach for him and call

him Daddy.

There, Adrian didn’t have to see the nursery that had stood empty in our New York apartment for

five years.

He didn’t have to see my left leg trembling with pain, or face the fact that he had sacrificed a wife

with no powerful family behind her for the sake of bloodline.

He could pretend he wasn’t a husband who had betrayed his marriage, but a good father

protecting the next generation of two powerful families.

It wasn’t that he didn’t know how badly I’d been hurt.

He knew.

single time, he simply chose the side that was easiest for him and sat most comfortably

in the family hierarchy.

Then Adrian found the email confirming my appointment for reconstructive surgery in Toronto.

He found my flight booking as well.

The destination was Toronto, the same city where the hospital was located

He booked a flight that very night.

Serena blocked the doorway and refused to let him leave

“If you go after Evelyn, where does that leave me and Noah? Mum and Dad said we’d sit down and

sort everything out once she’d calmed down. You said yourself the only reason you stayed was out

of duty.”

Adrian looked at her and suddenly asked, “And what about Evelyn?”

Serena stared at him, confused.

“What?”

“We all had a place in the plan. You wanted to bring Noah back to New York openly. Your parents wanted to protect their own daughter. I wanted to keep my wife and my son. There was a place for

everyone except Evelyn.”

“She lost our baby. The crash left her with a damaged leg. And every one of us decided she was the easiest person to sacrifice. We didn’t even think she had the right to know the truth. What was

she meant to do?”

Serena’s eyes reddened.

“You were the one who came to see me in Montreal. You said she had no family behind her and wouldn’t be able to cope if she found out about Noah. Now she’s walked away, and suddenly this is

all my fault?”

Adrian didn’t argue.

“I’m not. This isn’t all your fault. I told every lie. I made every choice.”

For the first time, he stopped shifting the blame onto anyone else.

Mum arrived soon afterwards, and the moment she heard what had happened, she turned on him.

“Serena gave you a Moretti child, and now you won’t stand by her? What place is she meant to have

in the family after this?”

Adrian’s voice was quiet,

“When Evelyn lost our baby, did any of you once stop to think how she was meant to go on?”

Mum was silent for a long time before answering.

“She had you. We took her in. She never had a family of her own, so as long as you looked after her.

what else did she need?”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“But I didn’t look after her. Not when she needed me.”

The room fell silent.

Before leaving, Adrian signed the divorce papers.

The lawyer looked surprised.

Adrian gripped the pen tightly.

“I don’t want the divorce. But she’s already lost too much because of me. I can’t use our marriage

or the Moretti name to hold her here.”

He asked for nothing in return.

He listed the Upper East Side apartment in his name, along with everything from the past five

years that fell under marital property..

But the lawyer slid the documents back across.the desk.

“Ms Bennett says there’s nothing in the apartment she wants. The assets will be divided according

to law. She’ll take what she’s entitled to and nothing beyond that.”

Adrian stared at those words for a long time without moving.

Once, I had needed to wait for him just to help me out of the apartment.

Now I didn’t even want the so–called protection or compensation he thought he could offer me.

Before his flight took off, Adrian sent me one final message.

Evelyn, I’m coming to find you.

It still didn’t go through.

Two months after arriving in Toronto, I underwent a fourth operation on my leg.

The surgery didn’t miraculously heal me.
