She Dressed Me Like Bait, Not Knowing the Shark Was My Brother Chapter 04

The room went dead silent.

Emily’s wine glass slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor. Her smug face turned pale as

paper.

“S-sister? Mr. Hayes, you’re joking… right?” She forced out a laugh, her eyes darting between us. “Her last name is Ryan and yours is Hayes. How can you be brother and sister?”

“She has our mother’s maiden name. I took our father’s. Is that a problem?” Jack didn’t even look up, his cold voice crushing her last hope.

He turned to look at me, his voice laced with frustration. “You told people you were from some podunk farm town, kid?”

I blinked at him innocently. “Jack, our family’s lake house is in the hills. I was living there before I

moved out. Technically…”

“You!” Emily shot to her feet, pointing a shaking finger at me. “Nicole, you did this on purpose! You deliberately misled me!”

“Misled you?” I chuckled, pushing her hand aside. “Ms. Foster, all I said was my family lives in the hills. You’re the one who decided that meant I was broke and desperate.”

“You’re the one who wanted me to be a powerless little nobody so you could control me and use me

as your personal stepping stone.’

I tilted my head slightly. “You see the world as you are. Only someone with a dirty heart assumes everyone else is in the gutter.”

Emily opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She just collapsed back into her chair.

Mr. Thornton finally snapped out of his daze. Cold sweat dripped down his forehead.

The quiet girl everyone in the company used to push around… was Jack Hayes’s sister? And they had just tried to make her act like a hostess?

He’d just ruined his own company.

“A misunderstanding! This was all a terrible misunderstanding!”

Desperate to save the deal, he immediately started screaming at Emily. “Foster! What have I told

Then he switched gears, turning a sickeningly sweet smil on me. “This was all Emily’s doing, Nicole. You know, our VP position has been open for a while. Have you ever thought about it?”

“Lane Holdings is yours again, and double your commission. We’re family here!”

Looking at his pathetic, weaseling face just made me sick.

Emily was a veteran who held a lot of client relationships. Mr. Thornton was just putting on a show

for us.

The minute my brother and I left, she’d get a slap on the wrist, maybe a demotion, but she’d never

be fired.

And I was done with this toxic dump anyway. “No thanks.”

I stood up and took Jack’s arm. “I appreciate the offer, Mr. Thornton, but my brother isn’t

impressed with a company that sells out its own people for profit, and neither am I. Keep my commission. Spend it on Ms. Foster’s regrets.”

Without looking back at Mr. Thornton’s pathetic pleas, I pulled Jack out of the room and slammed

the door.
