They Bet On How Fast I Would Cry On Our Anniversary Chapter 07

On the day we filed for divorce, Ethan was ten minutes late.

He was wearing the same suit he’d worn on our anniversary, with a bouquet of white roses in his

hand.

Three years ago, those same flowers had won me back.

I only found out later that even the number of roses and the timing of the apology had been scripted

in his plan.

He held the bouquet out to me.

“Your favorite.”

I didn’t take them.

“I stopped liking white roses ages ago.”

Ethan froze. “When?”

“Two years ago.”

He’d never noticed.

The clerk called our number.

Ethan stayed put, not moving.

“Claire, I deleted the group chat.”

“I won’t see any of them again.”

“I’ll delete every video. I’ll stop all the games.

He paused. “And Sophie-I’ll keep my distance.”

His phone rang. Sophie’s name lip up on the screen.

Ethan answered without thinking.

Sophie’s voice came through, thick with tears.

“Ethan, there are reporters everywhere downstairs. I can’t go out. Can you come get me?”

Ethan held the phone to his ear, already turning toward the door.

Then he saw me. He stopped himself.

“Call the security. I’ve got something to deal with today.”

He hung up, as if he’d finally made the right choice for once.

“Claire, I didn’t go. This time, I chose you.”

All I felt was exhaustion.

“But I don’t need you to choose me anymore.”.

For the past three years, every time Sophie needed him, I was the one he sacrificed.

Now that he’d finally told her no once, he thought that made up for everything.

But a choice made too late isn’t love. It’s panic.

We went to fill our paperwork..

The clerk confirmed we were both filing voluntarily..

“Yes.” I said firmly.

Ethan stayed silent for a long time.

The clerk asked again, and he finally nodded.

Once the application was in, there was a waiting period before the divorce would be finalized.

Outside the courthouse, Ethan tossed the white roses into the trash.

“Can these days count as my last chance?”

“It’s not a chance.”

I looked at him.

“It’s just the law.”
