My Fiancé Said I Was the Homewrecker Between Him and My BFF? Screw Them Both! Chapter 04

My Fiancé Said I Was the Homewrecker Between Him and My BFF? Screw Them Both! Chapter 04

I was in a room getting an antibiotic drip when my brother walked in.

“Playing the victim isn’t going to win a man back. Save your energy.

“You’re my sister, but when it comes to real love, I’m not going to lie to take your side.”

Preston’s sister was off to the side, picking at her nails.

“Did you know my brother disappears at ten every night to talk Phoebe to sleep?”

“Did you know he has Phoebe on priority alerts and you on Do Not Disturb?”

“Now that you know, could you stop getting in the way of what they have?”

I felt nothing at all.

So there was the night I got stuck at the office in a storm, and the night I passed out from my ulcer and

couldn’t reach him.

Both times, he’d been with Phoebe.

“I don’t want to look at either of you. Get out.”

The words were barely out when Preston came in, and he frowned at the IV in my hand.

“Didn’t I buy you the cream? Why is it bandaged up like that?”

My brother rolled his eyes.

“The nurse said she’s fine. She’s putting on a show for you.”

The concern in his eyes disappeared, replaced by disappointment.

He pulled the needle out of my hand, and blood came up right away.

“If you’re fine, go home. Phoebe’s going to worry if she sees this.”

“Cool off. I’ll pick you up at nine tomorrow and we’ll go get the license.”

I looked at the appointment on his phone and saw Phoebe’s information filled in, and I laughed.

“We broke up. Go get a license with whoever you want.”

Then I turned and walked out.

I got the transfer paperwork together and went to see my mother right at the start of visiting hours.

We’d barely said two sentences to each other before Preston started calling like a madman.

“Go apologize to Phoebe. She heard you say you were breaking up with me, and now she’s crying about

ending the pregnancy!”

“I already explained that night was an accident. Is it that hard for you to be the bigger person and forgive

her?”

“She’s your best friend. Are you going to stand there and let her go through a procedure like that?”

My mother’s face went white, and her breathing turned short and fast.

“Serena, what baby?”

I hung up in a panic, but she passed out anyway.

A nurse ran in and kept pushing me.

“She’s unstable. Go settle the payment so we can prep her for surgery!”

I stumbled down to the first floor to pay, and my card was declined three times.

I opened the banking app, and the balance was 590 dollars and 70 cents.

My hands were shaking when I called Preston. “Where’s the money in the account?”

His sister picked up.

“My brother just paid in full for a private maternity suite, so Phoebe can rest easy through the pregnancy.”

My voice broke. “My mother needs that money for surgery right now! Tell him to get it back!”

She snorted. “If you’re jealous of Phoebe, say so. You don’t have to use your own mother’s life as a shield.”

I screamed with everything I had. “Get the money back!”

Preston came over, took the phone, and wasn’t happy.

“You won’t even apologize, and now you’re jealous over a maternity suite?”

“I’m doing this for you. If I took care of her myself, you’d have a problem with that too.”

“My mother needs surgery…”

He cut me off, hard. “Watch your mouth. That’s a terrible thing to joke about. Your mom was fine

yesterday.”

“I’ll go see her first thing after we get the license tomorrow. Is that good enough?”

He hung up before I could say another word.

I called back, and nobody picked up.

I remembered what his sister had said about Do Not Disturb, and something in me went cold.

By the time I managed to borrow the money, the doctor came out of the operating room and shook his head.

“We were too late. She’s gone.”

I stood outside that cold operating room at night, and at first light, I took my mother to be cremated by

myself.

I was holding the urn on the way to the airport when the messages started pouring in.
