She Got The Ring And The Marriage, I Got The Silence Chapter 09

The evidence was airtight. The IG’s office launched a full investigation.

A court–martial panel tore the whole thing apart in weeks.

During the deployment Graham had led, Brielle couldn’t even pass basic marksmanship,

That, combined with the secret marriage, made the corruption undeniable.

He’d put her name on a combat roster she had no business being on, all so she could fast–track a

commission she never deserved.

The findings leaked, and Fort Ridgemont erupted.

Soldiers who’d spent years grinding through OCS prep and earning their stripes the hard way had zero sympathy. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Brielle had slept her way to the front of the line, and someone else had lost their slot because of it.

Military spouses and passed–over candidates flooded the IG hotline, demanding blood. Nobody saluted Graham anymore. They just stared, cold and disgusted, whenever he walked by.

Command didn’t waste time.

Brielle’s commission eligibility was revoked. She was slapped with a dishonorable discharge. Every

veteran benefit, gone.

Graham got it worse. Court–martialed. Stripped of his command. Dismissed from the service in disgrace. He lost his pension, his rank, everything.

When I heard, something in my chest loosened for the first time in months.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not for what they’d cost me.

Then came the criminal trial for Lenora.

The neighbor from Alderwick cracked on the stand. She was terrified of taking the fall alone, and

the whole story came pouring out.

“Brielle put me up to it!”

“She said she’d pay me fifteen hundred dollars. All I had to do was tell Lenora her granddaughter was messing around with a married officer and show her the marriage license.”

“Lenora and I never got along. I figured I’d get under her skin and get paid for it. I wasn’t thinking

straight. I just wanted to stir the pot. I never meant for her to die!”

Between the testimony and the wire transfers, Brielle had nowhere left to hide.

She knew Lenora had a bad heart, and she sent a hitman with a piece of paper anyway.

The jury didn’t take long. Brielle: involuntary manslaughter. Forty–two months in federal prison.

The accomplice took a plea deal for her cooperation. Sixteen months.

As I walked out of the courthouse, a butterfly landed in my hair. It stayed there, and I let it.

They say when a butterfly finds you, it’s a loved one checking in.

My eyes burned. I lifted the butterfly gently and set it on the brightest flower I could find.

Did you see them fall, Lenora?

Everyone who did this to you answered for it.

After the dismissal, Graham was evicted from base housing.

Before he left Fort Ridgemont, he came to see me one last time. He held out a bank card.

“The money I blew on Brielle’s family was your savings, Tessa. I liquidated everything to pay you

back.”

He’d sold the property he inherited from his grandmother for over seven hundred thousand dollars.

He transferred every cent into my account.

I took it.

He owed me two lives: Lenora’s and my baby’s. He could bleed out in front of me and I wouldn’t feel

guilty.

“Take care of yourself, Tessa.”

That was the last time I saw him.

Less than two months later, I heard what happened.

With Brielle locked up, her greedy parents turned their sights on Graham.

They blamed him for ruining her life and started extorting him to pay off their mortgages, their

debts, everything.

Graham refused. But they wouldn’t stop. They followed him, hounded him, wouldn’t let it go.

One night, he snapped. A double homicide.

He left a full written confession on his kitchen counter. Then, he put a gun to his head and pulled

the trigger.

The day the news broke, a pale butterfly landed on the back of my hand. It didn’t move.

I flicked it away.

If that was you, Graham… don’t bother. I don’t ever want to see you again. Not now. Not ever.

I’d walked through the darkest stretch of road I’d ever known. On the other side, the sun was

waiting.

I never looked back.
