Five years earlier, on a rainy night, Talia had called me crying and said she was pregnant

I knew ending a pregnancy could be physically and emotionally devastating.

I immediately told her to call the father.

If they both wanted the baby, I said, they should discuss marriage and raising it together.

He answered on the first ring.

I watched the hope on Talia’s face turn into panic.

After hanging up, she sobbed so hard she could barely breathe.

“Maren, he said he was drunk that night.”

“He doesn’t want the baby.”

I held her and cried because her pain felt like mine.

“Don’t be scared, Talia. I’ll call Graham.”

“He’ll make that monster answer for this.”

“No!”

She cut me off and begged me to accompany her to the clinic instead.

Why would I have questioned her then?

I stayed through the entire procedure and spent the following days preparing nourishing meals for

her.

The memory sent heat raging through my head until my skull throbbed.

Hatred flooded me, and I spoke through clenched teeth.

“Talia, do you have no shame at all?”

“When I cared for you and you ate every meal I cooked, did you never feel guilty?”

“Is that the kind of person your mother raised?”

Demises face reddened with humiliation but she said nothing

Martin’s expression turned dark enough to frighten anyone

He looked at Graham and asked coldly.

Is it true?

I glared at Graham too

“Answer him. You were willing to do it, so why can’t you admit it?”

“You and Talia deserve each other. You’re both vile.

“Was humiliating me for eight years entertaining?”

Graham closed his eyes and whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

Martin’s fist struck his face the next second.

“You bastard. You’re a goddamn disgrace!”

“You’ve disgraced this entire family!”

Graham stumbled into the entryway cabinet, blood gathering at the corner of his mouth.

Martin kept swinging, landing punch after punch.

Denise lunged forward too, clawing at Graham’s clothes and skin.

Her voice rose into a scream.

“Graham, I treated you like my own son! How could you do this?”

“How could either of you live with yourselves?”

I watched them.

I watched Denise pound Graham’s chest while Martin kicked him whenever he fell.

I watched Talia rush forward screaming, only for Denise to slap her into the coffee table.

Glasses shattered across the tile, and water mixed with blood, tears, and the rain beyond the

windows

I wanted to laugh

The laughter rolled out of my throat and would not stop.

My entire body shook, and tears streamed from the corners of my eyes.

Your family is incredible. This is the funniest thing ive ever seen.”

“Go on. Tell me again how close they are and how this was only innocent affection.”

“What was I supposed to be, your cover story or a shield against suspicion?”

“I must have the worst luck alive to end up surrounded by all of you.”

“Maren!”

Talia suddenly charged at me with murder in her eyes.

She grabbed both my shoulders and shoved with all her strength.

“Shut up! Shut your mouth!”

“This is your fault! Are you determined to destroy our entire family?”

“What kind of person does that?”

My lower back struck the couch arm.

Blunt pain exploded through me.

My body tipped sideways, and my stomach hit the floor.

Warm fluid spread between my legs as red soaked the carpet and widened around me.

“Maren!”

Graham screamed and dropped beside me.

“Call 911!”

My cheek pressed against the floor while I fought for each breath.

The ceiling light flickered above me.

It illuminated a room full of people, a room full of killers, and the wreckage of their lies.

That summer had felt endless.

It had never felt so cold.

“Graham…”

He bent close to hear me, speaking frantically without pause.

“Don’t be afraid, Maren. The ambulance is almost here.”

“I’m sorry. I am so sorry.”

“I was drunk that night. I never meant…”

“I hate you.”

My lips moved around the words, and then everything disappeared into darkness.
