Her Cloak Was Sewn With Blessings, While I Had Nothing Chapter 09

A year later, my pup’s first birthday party was held at the Moonlake Hotel in downtown Greyhaven.

Drystan took the entire top-floor ballroom.

Frostveil’s major allies, its business partners, and several friendly Packs all sent people.

The ballroom had been dressed up like a warm winter storybook.

Pale gold balloons, white flowers, and little wolf-shaped decorations covered the whole room.

I wore a custom gown, held Drystan’s arm, and carried my pup while we greeted the guests.

“The Frostveil Luna is glowing.”

A woman from a neighboring Pack said it with a smile.

“Alpha Drystan adores you and your pup is healthy and beautiful. Anyone would envy that.”

I thanked her.

She was right.

I was happy.

Halfway through the party, I went to the restroom.

Coming around a corner in the hallway, I heard two hotel staff talking low.

“Did you hear? That construction supply company under Alpha Garrick over at Greyfang is completely gone.”

“Seriously? Isn’t he the Frostveil Luna’s father?”

“Not for a long time. Word is Luna Sable formally left Greyfang.”

“His son took on a stack of high interest private loans after that and nobody knows where he went.”

“The other daughter moved back from Silverpine too. The whole family’s crammed into a house the bank is about to take, fighting every day.”

“That’s rough.”

I stood in the shadow of the corner and listened to all of it with nothing on my face.

How they lived now had nothing to do with me.

I went to the sink and turned the tap on.

Cool water ran over my fingers.

The woman in the mirror had steady eyes, and the careful, eager-to-please look was gone from her

face.

I touched up my lipstick and left.

Drystan was waiting at the end of the hallway.

He came over as soon as he saw me and put a hand on my waist.

“What took so long?”

“The pup’s been looking everywhere for his mama.”

“Nothing. I heard some gossip.”

I leaned into his shoulder.

He looked down at me.

“Whatever anybody out there says, remember one thing.”

“You’re my Luna, the lady of Frostveil, and the mate I value above everything.”

Mooked up, met his eyes, and smiled.

“I know.”

When we got back to the ballroom, the photographer was setting up the first birthday shot.

A plush wolf, blocks, a little rocking horse, and a mini football were laid out on the rug, with a small

cake set beside them for the picture.

My pup stood in the middle of the padding and looked around at all of it.

Nobody expected what he did, because he didn’t pick up a single thing.

He got his feet under him instead, took several wobbling steps on his own for the first time, and

came straight at me.

He grabbed hold of my leg.

“Mama.”

That small, milky voice got a laugh out of everyone in the room.

Drystan came over and gathered the two of us into his arms.

The photographer took the shot.

There was no forced good behavior in that photo, and no swallowed tears.

There was only love that never once hesitated.

And a happiness I finally held in my own hands.

I wasn’t anybody’s second choice anymore.

I had become the lead in my own life.
