Her Cloak Was Sewn With Blessings, While I Had Nothing Chapter 06

Sable Arden’s POV:

My mother started forward, and Drystan blocked her.

His eyes were red. He took my cold hand carefully and pressed his forehead into my palm.

“I’m sorry, Sable. I got here too late.”

I got my eyes open.

His shoulders were shaking.

I wanted to tell him it wasn’t his fault, and my throat was raw as sandpaper, and nothing came out

Past him, I could see my parents and Kieran standing behind. There was embarrassment in their

faces, and panic, and a little of the fear that comes afterward.

What I couldn’t find was the grief a parent wears after nearly losing a daughter.

I closed my eyes again, and the last thing I still expected from the Greyfang Pack went out.

I spent three days in intensive care.

Drystan didn’t leave that floor for three days. All he could do was watch me through the glass. Stubble came in, the shadows under his eyes went dark, and he seemed to lose weight in the space of a few days.

The Greyfangs came by a few times. Frostveil warriors stopped them at the door every time.

On the fourth day, I moved to a regular room.

Drystan put me in the quietest private suite in Mooncrest, with dedicated nurses and healers on

rotation around the clock.

I lay back on soft pillows and watched him wet a swab and work it over my cracked lips.

“Drystan.” My voice came out rough.

“I’m here.” He had my hand at once.

“I want to leave.”

“No.” It was the fastest he had ever refused me anything. “The healers say you need to be watched.”

“I don’t want to stay in Greyhaven.” I looked out at the bare branches. “It’s too cold here.”

He was quiet for a few seconds, then bent and kissed the back of my hand.

“All right. When your numbers hold, we go home to Frostveil.”

There was a light knock at the door.

A Frostveil warrior came in.

“Alpha, the Greyfangs are still outside. They say they have to see the Luna.”

Drystan’s face went dark.

“Send them away.”

“Let them in.” I said it calmly.

He turned to me with a frown.

He was afraid of what it would do to me.

I shook my head a little.

“Some things have to be said all the way through, once.”

The door opened.

The Greyfangs came in one after another.

Brielle came first. She was only days out from delivering and still pale, wrapped in an oversized knit

cardigan with her pup in her arms. The fur blessing cloak was still around the pup.

Her eyes went red the second she saw me.

“Sable.”

She said it timidly.

I didn’t answer her.

My mother came forward carefully with a thermal container.

“Sable, I made you chicken and wild rice soup. You’re weak right now, so eat plenty of it.”

She lifted the lid.

A heavy smell of mushrooms came off it.

I looked at the mushroom slices floating on top, and one corner of my mouth turned up.

“Mom. I don’t eat mushrooms.”

Maris stopped. “What? You loved them when you were little.”

“Brielle loves mushrooms.” I held her eyes. “I’m allergic. I ate them once as a pup, broke out head to toe, and the Pack clinic had to give me a shot.”

The room went quiet.

Maris’ hands stopped in midair with the soup.

Kieran cleared his throat twice.

“Mom’s getting older. Mixing things up happens. Sable, family doesn’t drag something this smal

out.”

“Family?” It landed on me like a joke. “When have any of you ever treated me like family?”

Nobody answered.

I pushed myself upright.

“As of today I am formally leaving the Greyfang Pack. I’ll file a bloodline withdrawal declaration with the Werewolf Council. I take nothing more as the daughter of the Greyfang Alpha, and I carry none of the obligations either.”

“From here on, I’m the Luna of the Frostveil Pack and nothing else.”
