Drystan had driven through the night from the north.

There was melting snow on his black coat, his eyes were shot through with red, and his collar was still crooked.

He saw the red light burning above the operating room, and the color left his face.

“There are two lives on that table and you’re standing here weighing whether she can have more pups later?”

The lead healer was still tearing into Kieran.

“The premature pup we just delivered went to the newborn intensive care ward with oxygen deprivation. If we don’t stop her bleeding, she dies!”

Drystan shoved Kieran out of the way and took the pen out of the healer’s hand.

He didn’t hesitate for half a second.

“I’m her mate and her registered medical proxy.”

He signed his name.

“Sable’s life comes first. Use the best option you have and bill all of it to the Frostveil Pack.”

The weight of a strong Alpha came down and put the whole hallway into silence.

With the consent in hand, the healer turned and went back in.

Drystan turned slowly to Kieran.

There was nothing warm left in his eyes.

“This is what you call taking care of her?”

Kieran carried Alpha blood, too, and that pressure still put the cold down his spine.

“Drystan, listen to me. This was an accident. Brielle was delivering today too, and the whole family

was with her…”

“The whole family?” Drystan laughed without any warmth. “So Brielle is family and my Luna isn’t?”

“Brielle has been Greyfang’s Pack Princess since she was a pup…”

Kieran stopped halfway through, and his face locked up, because it finally landed on him. Sable was

Alpha Garrick’s blood daughter, too. She carried the same bloodline and the same claim to the title

of Pack Princess. She had simply never fought for it and never asked for a single privilege.

And year after year, they had come to treat her like an ordinary warrior, somebody who was

naturally supposed to give and give to the family.

Drystan came at him one step at a time.

“Before I left Greyhaven I put more than enough on Sable’s medical account. I booked her the best private birthing suite and named the highest ranked healer team in this hospital. So why did she end up in a six bed ward? Why was not one of you there when she started bleeding out?”

Kieran backed up, guilty.

Garrick and Maris got the news and came down.

Maris saw Drystan, faltered, and then pushed a smile onto her face.

“Drystan, you’re back. Don’t work yourself up. Birth is hard on every woman. Sable has always been strong and she’ll come through it.”

“Strong.” He repeated the word, and his eyes went colder with it.

Then he grabbed Kieran by the collar and put him hard into the wall.

“Where’s her medical card?”

Kieran went white.

“Brielle… Brielle’s using it.”

Drystan closed his eyes.

His chest moved hard, and the wolf inside him let out a growl he was barely holding down.

Then he let go.

Kieran slid down the wall with nothing left in his legs.

“Good.”

Drystan’s voice had gone calm.

“You had better pray that Sable and my pup both live.”

“Because if they don’t, the Greyfang Pack pays for my anger in lives.”

The operating room doors finally opened.

The healer came out worn through and pulled his mask down.

“She’s alive. We couldn’t get the bleeding under control, so we had to take the uterus. She’s very

weak and she goes to intensive care first.”

The Greyfangs each reacted differently to that.

Maris said it under her breath without thinking.

“If the uterus is gone, then Frostveil’s heir…”

Drystan’s head snapped around.

A low wolf’s growl came out of his chest and shook the air.

Maris froze and didn’t dare put out another word.

Right then, the nurses wheeled Sable out.
