Her Cloak Was Sewn With Blessings, While I Had Nothing Chapter 04

The lights in the operating room were white enough to hurt.

Metal instruments knocked together under the healers’ fast orders.

“Pressure’s still falling. Is the blood from the bank here yet?”

“She’s going under. Get her on oxygen!”

I could feel the heat draining out of my body.

It was very cold.

My wolf curled into herself, and even her breathing went thin.

“Stay with me. Don’t sleep!”

The healer slapped my cheek.

I tried to open my eyes, and my lids were weighted like stone.

Third Person POV:

At the same moment, at the other end of the hallway.

“Waaah!”

A newborn’s cry cut through the early morning.

Outside Brielle’s delivery room, everyone from the Greyfang Pack let go of a breath at once.

“She had it!”

Maris was crying with it.

Kieran brought his hands together hard.

“Thank god. Brielle and the pup are both fine.”

Garrick finally smiled.

Brielle came out of the delivery room pale but alert.

She had her newborn in her arms. The blessing cloak, made from two shares of Alpha bloodline fur, was wrapped tight around the pup. Every one of them could smell the heavy Greyfang family scent coming off it.

“Mom, I’m so tired,” Brielle said softly.

“Honey, you went through it.” Maris stroked her cheek. “I already have hot soup on the way.”

The whole family walked her back to the private suite.

Once she was settled, Kieran frowned.

“Where’s Sable? Brielle has already delivered and she hasn’t shown her face once.”

It occurred to Maris for the first time.

“That’s right. Where did she go? Her own sister gives birth and she can’t be bothered to come. She gets ruder every year.”

Garrick frowned.

“Go down to the six bed ward and bring her up here. Brielle needs the extra hands.”

Kieran turned and went, annoyed.

He walked into the general maternity wing and pushed the ward door open.

“Sable, wake up. Brielle already had it. You…”

His voice stopped.

The bed by the window was empty.

There were wide, dark red stains across the sheets and down onto the floor.

Kieran stood where he was.

He even stepped back out to check the room number and make sure he hadn’t gone to the wrong place.

“Where’s the woman from this bed?”

He caught a nurse by the arm.

She glanced at the bed number, and her face went hard.

“Who are you to her?”

“I’m her brother.”

Kieran’s brows drew down.

“Where is she?”

The nurse stared at him.

“You don’t know?”

“She hemorrhaged and went into shock. When they took her into surgery, the pup’s heart rate and hers were both nearly gone!”

Something went off inside Kieran’s head.

“She hemorrhaged?”

The nurse was already hurrying toward operating room three with a file in her hand.

“We’ve been looking for family for ages. Her emergency contact won’t pick up. Where has your whole family been?”

The color left Kieran’s face, and he stumbled after her.

They reached operating room three.

The lead healer came out with emergency surgical consent papers and sweated all over his forehead.

“Family for Sable Arden? Who here is family?”

Kieran’s legs nearly went out from under him.

“Me. I’m her brother.”

The healer pushed the papers at him and spoke fast and heavy.

“Uterine rupture, massive blood loss, and she’s in hemorrhagic shock. If we can’t stop the bleeding, the only way to save her is an emergency hysterectomy. I need proxy consent right now!”

Kieran’s hands shook too hard to hold the pen.

“A hysterectomy? We can’t do that. Drystan will kill us when he gets back… isn’t there another way?”

While he stood there hesitating, heavy, fast steps came down the far end of the hall.

A tall figure was almost running.

It was Drystan.
