I woke early the next morning.

I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling for a long moment before getting up to cross another day off the calendar.

Six days until the wedding.

Luca called just before his private plane took off.

But when I answered, it was Bianca’s voice on the line.

“Elena, I’m so sorry. I know Luca shouldn’t be out here with

me right now. But don’t worry. In one week, I’ll return him to

safe and sound. Just think of this as me saying final

goodbye to more than twenty years of friendship.”

Her voice was bright, almost giddy.

I could hear the taunt buried in her words: *return him to you*

She was reminding me that Luca was not a man I could ever have to myself. As long as she invoked their past and her protected status, he would always answer her call.

“Are you done?” I asked.

There was a half-second of silence.

“You’re not angry?”

“Why would I be?”

From the moment I decided to disappear, nothing they did mattered anymore.

I hung up, put on my coat, and went out.

I had an appointment with my financial advisor to finalize

the anonymous trust.

In a quiet café downtown, he slid the documents across the table for my signature. He didn’t know the full story, only that I was separating my personal assets before marriage.

“Elena, everything is in effect now.”
