Pity From My Rich Sister? Oops, Her New Family Came Begging Chapter 09

At eight the next morning, I crossed the hotel lobby, dressed and ready for the day.

A black sedan was parked beyond the revolving doors.

Elodie stood beside it, looking as though she had not slept all night. The moment she saw me, she

straightened.

“Carys.”

Her voice was hoarse.

“Can we talk?”

“About what?”

She reached for my sleeve. Her fingers were ice-cold.

“Pleas

me a few minutes.”

en minutes.”

We went to Copperlane Café across the street.

“That Instagram post…” She bit her lip. “I only put it up because I didn’t want people laughing at me. The ceremony never happened.”

“After Grandpa Kincaid and you left, Rhodes’s father called him back to Ridgeglass Estate. He hasn’t called me since, Carys, I don’t know what to do.”

have eight minutes left.”

Could you talk to his grandfather for me? Rhodes only left because he knew he’d made things worse. He still wants to marry me. Just ask Mr. Kincaid not to hold this against him so we can go through with the ceremony-”

“First,” I cut in, “I never asked Mr. Kincaid to punish either of you. I have better things to do.”

Elodie stared at me.

“Second, when things went wrong yesterday, Rhodes left you standing there and walked away. You

should be asking yourself whether that’s the kind of man you can depend on.”

Her expression hardened.

The fragile sweetness she had been clinging to cracked apart, revealing the resentment

underneath.

“Carys Calder.”

The sweetness was gone from her voice.

“You must be loving this.”

“You used to be the one nobody noticed. I was the successful daughter. Mom and Dad chose me, our friends chose me, and you were always pushed to the edge of every family photo.”

“And now you’re above everyone. You get to watch our lives fall apart while people worship you. Is this everything you wanted?”

Her bloodshot eyes stayed fixed on mine.

I stood.

“Elodie, instead of obsessing over how I feel, you should be figuring out how to get back into the

Kincaids’ good graces.”

Her pupils tightened.

“Keeping Rhodes and securing your place in that family should be your priority right now. Wasting

your energy on me won’t get you anything.”

I walked around her and headed for the door.

A raw scream followed me.

Something heavy hit the floor, then came the sharp crack of a phone breaking.

“Carys Calder! You own a few patents. So what?”

“Who the hell do you think you are?”

I didn’t bother turning around.

A few days later, someone knocked on the door of my penthouse suite.

When I opened it, my parents were standing there with shopping bags in both hands, smiling far too

brightly.

Merrick raised his phone the second he stepped inside and began recording.

“A penthouse suite? How much does this place cost per night?”

Ottilie took in the suite, then looped her arm through mine.

“Wow, Carys. You’ve really made it. Some of us are still stuck grinding away at ordinary jobs while you live like this. I’m jealous.”

I pulled my arm away.

“What do you want?”

My mother nudged Elodie forward.

She stumbled a step, then spoke so quietly I could barely hear her.

“Carys, I was wrong about what happened at the reception. And about what I said at the café.”

“I never should’ve tried to set you up in front of everyone. I shouldn’t have accused you of enjoying our problems, either. I was angry and said things I didn’t mean. Please don’t hold it against me.”

“Yes, exactly.” My mother hurried closer, smiling anxiously. “Elodie knows she was wrong. She’s been crying for days. She can barely eat or sleep.”

“You’re sisters. Whatever happens, that bond doesn’t disappear.”

She reached for my hand.

“Please forgive her this once.”
