My Online Boyfriend Lives In The Next Room Chapter 09

Alistair was in Graham’s office for ten minutes. That was it

He glanced at me before leaving.

Sloane came back to her desk. No one was waiting at the teller windows, so two coworkers gathered around

her “Sloane, is Mr. Mercer actually moving that much money? What did your dad say?”

My guess was that Graham had thrown every incentive he had at Alistair: better rates, better terms, anything

to keep that money in the bank. Losing an account that size would be catastrophic.

All of Graham’s annual targets would probably be for nothing.

Sloane shot me a venomous look. “Somebody probably ran her mouth. My dad’s still in there trying to fix it.”

Sure enough, my desk phone rang.

Graham called me up to his office.

I went upstairs.

He was furious. “Did you say something to Mr. Mercer? Did you give him a reason to wire his money out?”

Sloane had clearly put the idea in his head. But I hadn’t said a word out of line.

I didn’t understand why Alistair wanted to wire the funds either.

But my mind had already shifted to something else entirely.

I studied financial management. Asset management was my specialty; I’d graduated top of my class.

The kind of money in Alistair’s account belonged in a professional portfolio, not sitting in a retail bank account Managed properly, it could grow exponentially.

Bank interest rates had a ceiling. Then again, it barely mattered. Alistair could live off the interest alone and

never run out

Last night’s homework had been [If you were given ten billion dollars, how would you manage the assets?]

The perfect case study had just walked into my branch

After work, I’d build a real proposal around it and knock out the assignment.

Sloane abused her manager-access to pull the security footage and went through every word I’d said to Alistair, frame by frame.

At the end of the day, I was about to clock out.

Sloane stepped in front of me. “Laurel, what was that about? Those questions he asked you. Since when do you have a boyfriend?”

“And he said you blocked him. You two have been talking? On what?”

“Have you actually met him? Do you know he’s [Crystal Clear]? Did you tell him about me?”

Sloane had no idea I’d been living with Alistair for the past year. I’d never talked about my personal life at work. As far as she knew, Alistair and I were strangers.

I gave her just enough. “Sloane, Alistair and I do know each other.”

“I didn’t know he was [Crystal Clear]. Not until recently.”

“I haven’t told him I was ghostwriting for you.”

“He’s your boyfriend. Ask him yourself.”

“How do you know him?” Sloane pressed.,

“Six months ago, when he came into the bank, that time you weren’t here. Remember?”

Her face confirmed everything. She’d gone after Alistair the moment she saw his account balance.

“Sloane, I don’t owe you answers.”

I clocked out. “I’m done for the day.”

Behind me, Sloane’s nails dug into her palms.
