My Online Boyfriend Lives In The Next Room Chapter 08

It was ten in the morning.

Alistair walked into the bank.

He walked straight to my teller window and stepped up to the glass.

I glanced over at Sloane’s station. Empty. The [Next Teller] sign was up.

Probably worn out from last night and hiding somewhere to avoid working.

I put on a professional smile. “How can I help you today, sir?”

Alistair pulled out a hundred-dollar bill and an invitation-only black debit card. “Deposit this for me.”

That card was our bank’s most exclusive tier, custom-issued and by invitation only. I’d only seen one in training.

A hundred dollars. On a card like that. Was he serious?

He had probably come to see Sloane. She wasn’t here, so he’d ended up at mine.

“Certainly, sir.” I processed the deposit for him.

He swiped the card and entered his PIN when prompted.

I saw the account balance and my breath caught.

Wait, how many zeros were there?

I counted them. Counted again.

I knew Alistair had money. I hadn’t expected this.

I worked with money every day. I knew plenty of rich people whose wealth was mostly on paper. Their actual liquid cash was never that impressive.

Alistair’s account was something else entirely.

Some people were born at the top. We didn’t live in the same world.

But I was climbing my way up. Whether or not he’d ever notice, I’d keep going.

Something clicked. I finally understood why Sloane had wanted him so badly.

He must’ve come into the bank before. Sloane must have seen the balance in his account.

Or maybe her father knew about Alistair’s family and pointed her in his direction.

Sloane’s family looked rich from the outside. But her father was still a salaried employee, a branch manager, not old money. He was nowhere near Alistair’s league.

I snapped back to the screen and finished the deposit.

Alistair’s voice dropped. “Laurel. Have you met up with your boyfriend yet?”

“Why did you block me?”

“Mr. Mercer, I’m at work right now. I can’t discuss personal matters.”

“Your deposit is complete. Is there anything else I can help you with?”

Alistair held my gaze. “I need to initiate a wire transfer. A massive one.”

“How much?”

Alistair gave me a number, and I drew in a sharp breath.

“Sir, a wire transfer of that size requires branch manager approval. Let me contact him. One moment,

please.”

I picked up the desk phone and called Graham’s office. I explained the amount. Graham told me to bring him

up immediately. He’d handle it personally.

“Mr. Mercer, if you’ll follow me.”

Sloane was sitting on the sofa in Graham’s office when we walked in. Graham came out to greet Alistair

himself, all smiles and warmth.

Graham turned to me. “Laurel, you can head back.”

“Of course, Mr. Carrington.” I nodded and left.

Behind me, I could feel the weight of Alistair’s stare burning into my back all the way to the stairwell.
