The comments were getting in the way of my studying.

I wished I could just block them.

I rubbed my eyes without thinking.

When I opened my them, the comments were gone.

The world was finally quiet.

I could actually focus.

Two hours later, the class ended.

I stood up, stretched, and cracked open the floor-to-ceiling window for some air.

Sloane hadn’t logged in once during the entire two-hour class.

So she and Alistair had really gone all the way.

I didn’t regret the deal. At least I got what I needed out of it.

I grew up without much, and the feeling of never being safe had been with me as long as I could remember. I

wasn’t going to wait around for some man to make me feel secure.

I’d build that for myself.

The breeze came through the window, and for a second, the ache in my chest eased.

I blocked Alistair’s number.

I went to work. Sloane arrived late

Sloane caught me looking and smiled. “I hit the jackpot.”

“Congratulations.”

She leaned in closer. “Guess what we did last night…”

I cut her off. “Sloane, I really don’t need to hear this.”

Sloane searched my face. “Laurel. Are you jealous?”

I didn’t flinch. “I’m busy.”

Sloane laughed. “Guess I was reading too much into it. He’s mine now. Even if you wanted him, you’re too

late.”

“We already slept together. You wouldn’t want my leftovers anyway.”

“Anyway, go do your thing. I’ll leave you alone.”

Sloane pulled out her lipstick and touched up her makeup. She tilted her compact, angling it to admire the hickey

She looked thoroughly pleased with herself.
