“Weren’t you the one who told me to stop being so uptight and let loose?”

Sloane’s smile went tight. “I was kidding. Don’t take it so literally.”

“Whatever. It works in my favor anyway. Now I can push for tonight.”

“I’ll ask him now. You should get back to work.”

She walked back to her desk, already typing.

Something ached.

Six months of carefully growing something, only to hand the whole thing to someone else. I didn’t realize

how much it hurt until the moment I let go.

Somewhere along the way, I’d gotten attached.

I reminded myself it was never mine. I was just the hired help. And I’d been paid for it.

We had a deal from the start. Win him over, hand back the account, let her read through everything.

That was the agreement. I had to stick to it.

The relationship was Sloane’s now. All of it.

It was time to let go.

After work, I returned to the hotel.

Takeout, shower, then straight to the desk.

Six months ago, I’d passed the entrance exam for a global financial management fellowship. It was run by

one of the top business schools in the world. Its alumni were some of the biggest names in finance.

Each session offered only thirty seats. Twenty went to industry professionals who could pay their way in

with a two-million-dollar donation. The other ten were admitted by exam.

Over ten thousand people applied each cycle. I was admitted with a score in the top three.

My tuition was a hundred and sixty-eight thousand.

I had majored in finance in college. I had never stopped studying after graduation.

My family didn’t have money, but I refused to spend my whole life behind a bank counter. I wanted more. A bigger life than the one I’d been handed.

That fellowship was the whole reason I’d taken Sloane’s deal.

Sloane was in the same fellowship. Her father, Graham Carrington, had pulled strings and paid the full two

million donation for her spot.

Classes met twice a week. I never missed one.

Today was no different.

Three minutes until class. I stood up and pulled the curtains open. A breeze came through.

Across the street, a familiar Maybach was pulling into the five-star hotel. Alistair’s car. The custom 7777

plates gave it away.

Comments drifted across my vision. [OMG, Alistair and Sloane are meeting in the presidential suite tonight.]

The three minutes passed, and I closed the curtains.

I logged in right on time. As expected, Sloane was absent.

Not my problem. I had my own future to focus on.
