My Fiancé Took Her on Vacation Instead of Marrying Me? I Married WAY Better Chapter 04

Lisa watched the car vanish into the storm, her eyes burning red.

“Serena, don’t just stand here. Let me drive you.”

I was about to nod when a voice came from behind.

“Ms. Wright? Mr. Hale said… you need to hand over the office spare keys and his apartment key fob.”

I went still.

The apartment key fob.

He’d bought that place five years ago, when the company finally stabilized.

He’d wrapped his arms around me in the empty living room and called it our home.

Our future wedding. Our kids. Our whole lives.

When he programmed my fingerprint into the lock, he’d kissed my forehead and said, “This place is yours now.”

And now, in this weather, he sent someone after me to take it back.

Lisa lost it.

“What does he think? That Serena’s going to steal from him?”

The guard shifted awkwardly. “I’m just passing along the message…”

I didn’t say a word. I pulled the key fob from my wallet and handed it over.

He took it, looking uncomfortable, then added, “Also… Mr. Hale said there’s a project deck on your computer for tomorrow’s investor meeting. He needs you to email it to him now.”

Lisa let out a bitter laugh.

“He fired her, and he’s still giving orders?”

But I just felt numb.

“Got it.”

After the guard left, Lisa dragged me to The Corner Café downstairs to get out of the rain.

We hadn’t even sat down for two minutes when my phone started blowing up.

Work chat. Project chat. Admin chat. Messages poured in one after another.

I opened them. Ethan had sent a company-wide announcement:

[Effective immediately, Serena Wright has resigned for personal reasons. All her projects will be handed over to Mira Bennett. All departments are to cooperate fully and refrain from spreading any unverified information that may affect company stability.]

Then Mira chimed in:

[My first big project—I’m so nervous! Hope you’ll all guide me, seniors~]

The replies flooded in, all eager to please.

Then admin posted the real kicker:

[Mira Bennett is appointed Special Assistant to the CEO, taking full charge of key projects for the IPO.]

I stared at the screen, my fingers going cold.

That position was supposed to be mine. Ethan had promised it to me after the New Year.

Almost no one at the company knew we’d been together for eight years.

He said once we went public, he’d finally announce me—as his fiancée and partner.

I’d pulled so many all-nighters for that promise.

And now he’d handed it to another woman.

Lisa didn’t hold back.

“Unbelievable! She’s been here three days—she doesn’t know the first thing about an IPO!”

Before she could finish, my phone buzzed again.

A mass email.

[Notice of Project File Transfer]

The wording was polished, but the message was simple: all core files I’d touched had to be handed over by 8 PM tonight. Failure to comply would result in legal action.

Lisa slammed the table.

“He’s doing this on purpose! Who can transfer that much in a few hours?”

I knew. This wasn’t about work.

It was humiliation.

He wanted me to understand that everything I’d built over eight years could be stripped away with one word from him.

He was waiting for me to cave. To come crawling back. To beg.

But he’d be waiting forever.

I picked up my box and stood.

“Lisa, I need to go.”

“Not back to the office,” I said. “Home. To pack.”

She frowned. “What about the files?”

I looked out at the rain and smiled wryly.

“He said he’d hold me responsible?”

“Let him try.”

I wouldn’t take a single file from their system.

But the private notes I’d put together over countless sleepless nights?

He didn’t deserve those.

I stepped into the rain with my umbrella.

The moment I reached the curb, a familiar black Bentley pulled up in front of me.

The window rolled down, revealing Mira’s polished, triumphant face.

She was sitting in the passenger seat, my lumbar cushion cradled in her arms, her voice dripping with fake sweetness.

“Serena, it’s raining so hard. Must be hard to get a cab, right?”

“Want a ride?”

I said nothing.

She pressed on, undeterred.

“There’s not much room, though. The back seat is full of client files. You might have to sit on the floor mat with your box.”

I stood in the rain, staring at the seat that used to be mine.

Ethan’s hands were on the wheel. He didn’t say a word.

I laughed.

“No thanks.”

“Too dirty.”

Mira’s smile froze.

Ethan’s face went dark.

“Serena, who are you calling dirty?”

“Whoever answers.”

I stepped around the front of the car.

The Bentley lunged forward—straight through a massive puddle on the curb.

Splash.

Ice-cold muddy water drenched me from head to toe.

My dress, my coat, my box—soaked.

The bottom of the box gave way with a wet snap, spilling everything into the filthy street.

Through the pounding rain, I heard Mira’s muffled laugh from inside the car.

Ethan didn’t even slow down.
