My Fiancé Took Her on Vacation Instead of Marrying Me? I Married WAY Better Chapter 02

The room went even quieter after that.

Nobody expected me—the one who always held back, always knew her place—to go that far in public.

Ethan clearly hadn’t seen it coming either.

His fingers tightened around my wrist, his face dropping visibly.

“Say that again.”

I looked up, my voice flat.

“I said you don’t get to marry me anymore.”

Mira gasped, as if I’d wounded her personally, and spoke up in her softest tone.

“Serena, how could you talk to Ethan like that?”

“He works so hard for this company. Instead of appreciating him, you hurt him with words like that?”

I stared at her and almost laughed.

She’d been here three days, and she already dared to speak for him, to defend him from “hurt.”

And Ethan let her.

Sure enough, the next second he shoved me away, his tone frigid.

“Serena, apologize to Mira.”

I blinked, wondering if I’d heard him wrong.

“Apologize to her?”

“Yes.”

He looked at me with nothing but coldness in his eyes.

“For your sarcastic comments just now, and for the negative atmosphere you’re creating in this office.”

“Mira is new. You scared her today, and instead of being a decent senior, you made a public scene. Is an apology really that hard?”

My coworkers’ faces had gone sour.

Lisa didn’t hold back. “Ethan, have you lost your mind?”

But he didn’t even glance at her. He kept his eyes locked on me.

Mira tugged at his sleeve, eyes red.

“Forget it, Ethan. Serena probably just loves you too much—that’s why she’s so out of control.”

“She doesn’t have to apologize. I can take a little hit.”

She said that, but her body leaned closer to his.

And I became the bully.

I laughed out loud.

Ethan’s expression darkened. “What’s so funny?”

“How blind I was,” I said. “Eight years, and I never saw what you really are.”

That hit him like a slap.

His eyes went dark. Then, in front of everyone, he knocked my packed box straight off the desk.

Crash.

Mug, notebook, charger, folders—and the photo from our early startup days, the one I’d placed on top—scattered everywhere.

I couldn’t breathe.

That photo was from our first year, when we rented that basement office.

And now he looked down at it like it was garbage.

“If you’re leaving, leave clean.”

“Don’t stand there looking like the victim, like this company owes you something.”

I crouched down and picked everything up, one by one.

My finger hit broken glass, and blood welled up red.

But I still lifted that shattered picture, brushed off the dust.

Mira let out a little “Oops.” I looked up and saw her heel pressed right on my fallen badge.

She quickly stepped back, all apologies.

“So sorry, Serena. I didn’t mean to.”

But while her mouth said sorry, her foot ground down just a little more.

I stared at her.

She gave me a smile only I could see, and whispered:

“Serena, when you sit in a seat that’s not yours for too long, someone will eventually ask you to get up.”

Before I could answer, Ethan cut in, impatient.

“Are you done packing? If so, stop disrupting everyone’s work.”

He paused, then added for good measure.

“And hand over your company computer, email, and client files by the end of today. Miss anything, and I can still hold you responsible.”

I picked my badge up from under Mira’s foot.

Then raised my hand and dropped it into the trash.

“Don’t worry.”

“I’m not taking a single thing from this place.”
