“Mallory, what happened? Did you and Ethan fight?”

I took off my shoes and entered the living room.

“Mom, I want to end the pregnancy.”

The glass slipped from Mrs. Bennett’s hand and shattered.

Her face turned white.

“Have you lost your mind? You’re six months pregnant.”

I sat down and told her everything from the past three years.

I described Serena’s necklace, the false spouse record, and the corporate gala.

My mother cried as she listened.

She wrapped both arms around me, her hands shaking.

I had hidden every humiliation from my parents because I did not want them to regret helping Ethan build his company.

“How could he treat my daughter this way?”

“You will divorce him.”

She wiped her face.

“And you shouldn’t bring a child into a life where both of you will suffer.”

My mother had once welcomed Ethan because she believed he loved me despite having little money.

Learning what happened after my family helped him succeed left her grieving and furious.

The following afternoon, she accompanied me to the hospital.

The doctor confirmed my decision again and presented a thick packet of informed-consent and surgical-risk forms.

“The procedure can cause severe hemorrhage and may affect your future fertility.”

“Read everything carefully and sign here.”

My mother’s pen shook.

Each page listed another possible complication, but she continued because I had already made my decision.

My phone vibrated as she reached the final page.

Ethan was calling.

“Where are you?”

He sounded tired.

“Out.”

“Did you go to your parents?”

“I sent my assistant to our house with food you like, but no one answered.”

He paused.

“I was wrong this morning. I’m sorry.”

“Stop being angry and come home.”

“Serena’s stomach condition flared up, so I’m at the hospital while she receives an IV.”

“I’ll come home after I finish taking care of everything.”

I watched my mother sign the last line.

He was already inside the same hospital, yet he never asked which hospital I had visited the night before.

“All right.”

Ethan relaxed.

“That’s better.”

“When work settles down, I’ll take you on a vacation, just the three of us.”

“Okay.”

He described the future with complete confidence while my mother finished authorizing the procedure that would end it.

“Go home early and don’t wander around.”

The call ended.

The doctor collected the paperwork and handed me an admission order.

“Complete registration. We’ll begin the procedure tonight.”

I carried the papers through the hospital corridor.

The smell of disinfectant was sharp.

As I passed the emergency infusion bay, I looked inside.

Ethan sat by the window.

Serena rested against his shoulder with her eyes closed while an IV ran into her arm.

He carefully pulled her fallen coat back over her.

The gesture was quiet and practiced, the kind of care he had stopped offering me long ago.

I watched them quietly, then turned toward the inpatient wing.

Ethan believed I was returning home obediently. I walked past him toward the room where I would sever the strongest remaining tie between us.
