NOOOO!!!! BRIAN NO!!!!

I screamed like hell and cried watching this despite how invincible I was in this world now.

It was Victor that had stabbed Zane from behind and it was because he couldn’t face him.

“Victor what have you done!!” Brian shouted but Zane immediately held him tight holding his clothes as he tried to speak.

“It’s…okay Brian. I asked…him to, Yara is dead, I’ll die with her too”

Zan explained and only then did Brian understand.

It was Zane’s wish, his dying request.

“I’m sorry Zane. I couldn’t face you to do-” Victor held Zane from behind.

“Thank you..dear friend” Zane said his last word and he died in their arms.

The whole Vampires watching the scene were aware and they fell to one knee as a sign of respect to their king.

Then out of the blue I heard Claire the Moon Goddess voice.

“Congratulations, Little Hybrid,” the Moon Goddess said happily. “In your final moments, you achieved full romantic love from Dorian, Aldric, and Zane, and true familial love from your brother. Your mission is complete. You will live again in your original world. You did it girl!!”

I FULFILLED MY MISSION?

The Mood Goddess had somehow bent the rules for me.

But I didn’t feel entirely happy. I felt hollow because the man I had fallen in love with died also.

When I woke up in my original world, I was in a hospital.

I saw the white ceiling above me. I could smell the antiseptic all over.

The sound of machines doing their steady, patient work. Sunlight was right at my face through a window that didn’t burn.

I lay very still and let the world assemble itself around me.

I was back in the Modern world. My original world. Cities and electricity and all the ordinary miraculous noise of the life I had been pulled away from twenty five years ago in a body that had been a newborn and was now – somehow, blessedly with mine again.

A nurse appeared in the doorway.

“You’re awake,” she said warmly. “Good. You gave us quite a scare.” She checked something on a monitor “You were in a car accident. You’ve been unconscious for three days. She paused. “Oh – and there was another survivor. The young man who apparently tried to ram his car into the vehicle that hit you’ She smiled. “He’s been asking about you every hour.”

And coincidentally the door opened and my head turned toward it.

Then I was shocked to find who it was.

It was Zane in the doorway!!!

Oh my God!

He was from this world too.

He was leaning on crutches, looking like he hadn’t slept in three days either. Wearing the same slightly wrecked expression he had worn on the cliff at sunrise except now there was something else underneath t – something open and unguarded and completely unashamed.

He looked at me and I looked at him back and then we both smiled simultaneously.

“You made it,” he said.

“You made it too,” I said.

He crossed the room and sat on the edge of my bed and took my hand and we stayed like that for a long time without saying anything else because some things don’t need words and some reunions are too large for language.

Eventually I turned my hand over and held his.

“Yara, this time, we really are the hero and heroine of this world.”

I threw my arms around him and hugged him tight, tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

Later, Zane told me everything, every single thing and I finally understood the questions and puzzles in my head.

He’d been my classmate in college and he had a crush on me for years but never once told me.

He accidentally found out Rose wanted to kill me on the day of the accident and he had tried to save me by ramming his car into hers.

It wasn’t enough. He didn’t end up saving me. I still died.

While he was unconscious, the Moon Goddess approached him. She told him that if he could successfully win me over. he could return to the original world.

It also told him about my deal.

He learned that I had to make one of four men fall in love with me to go home.

And fortunately he was going to be one of those men.

He was overjoyed. Because no matter who won over whom, we would both succeed.

But then the system said: “If Yara wins you over, that counts for her deal. But she has other options. You onlyje have her to make her fall in love with you naturally.”

So he stayed away from me. He hung around Luna on purpose.

He didn’t just want me to succeed. He wanted me to live and pick who I wanted to fall in love with.

When he found out that Rose had framed me, that Tyson had hit me, that Aldric had abandoned me, thay Dorian had cursed me, left me-he wanted to protect me.

But he was afraid that if he got too close, I would take advantage and make him fall for her with the aim tha she wanted to fulfill her deal.

So he stayed in the shadows. He collected evidence. He sent me anonymous texts to keep me going./

By the time he had enough proof and had tracked down the rogue, gotten enough vampire and ally on his side also getting the dagger, I was already trying to commit suicide, it seemed as if my deal had failed, so he found me locked in the Asylum.

He spent every day trying to get me out. But Tyson and Aldric had made sure no outsiders could get in.

When he finally did break me out, he confirmed that my mission had failed. I had to die.

He didn’t want me to suffer anymore. So he let me go.

After I died, he begged the Moon Goddess to let me stay a little longer.

He wanted me to see them regret what they’d done to me.

He thought I’d suffered too much to leave without that and somehow the petty, ruthless, sassy Goddess became caring that she agreed.

When they all died the four male leads, the Moon Goddess told him:

“Congratulations, Zane. You have achieved true romantic love from Yara. Because Yara completed her mission and fell in love with you, you may both return to your original world.”

He finished explaining and I understood. Then he paused and said.

“Oh…Brian sends his regards.”

I almost laughed. “Brian.”

“He was magnificent,” Zane said seriously. “He really was. I always knew he was the strongest warlock in the territory. He just needed a reason to stop hiding it.”

“Yeah I saw it too”

I looked at our joined hands and then I remembered someone.

“My mom.

Zane was quiet for a moment.

“She doesn’t exist in this world,” he said carefully. “She was part of that one.” He paused before saying the last part. “I’m sorry Yara.”

I had known. I had known since the goodbye when she pressed my hands to her chest and I felt the weight of the last time.

I had known and I was carrying her anyway just like I had promised.

“She told me to take care of myself,” I said.

“Then do that,” Zane said. “We both will.”

Then I heard her voice. The Moon Goddess’s voice but it was very low in my head.

“For what it’s worth,” her voice was already fading “you were the most interesting character I ever chose and I’m glad you won.”

“Goodbye little hybrid. Go be the heroine of your own story for once. I’m glad you found your hero”

“Goodbye Claire, thank you for everything” I said back smiling that I didn’t know when tears dropped.

And just like that Claire was gone.

I turned to Zane and he was already looking at me.

“So,” I said. “What now?”

He smiled just like in the other world when we left the Asylum and were moving around. It was the first real smile I had ever seen on his face in this world and his smile was entirely for me.

Twenty five years in the other world and here we are together.

“I love you,” I said looking deep into his eyes.

“I love you too,” he replied back without breaking contact. “I have always loved you in that world and this one and any one that comes after.”

I leaned in and kissed him deeply and leaned my head against his shoulder.

Outside the hospital window the city was full of ordinary life and I listened to it with my eyes closed and felt, for the first time in a long time, like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

If you are sincere enough, you will make it to the end.

When hearts are together, they never truly part.
