The Female Hybrid Everyone Hated Chapter 13

The Female Hybrid Everyone Hated Chapter 13

For the first time in twenty five years someone looked at me the way this man was looking at me — like 1 was not a mission or a problem or a supporting character in someone else’s story, but the whole point. The entire reason for being wherever he was.

“Yara,” he said.

“Don’t,” I said softly. “Don’t say things that are going to make this harder.”

“I have to.” His voice was quiet and absolutely certain.

“I know you are going to kill yourself”

“But don’t worry, I won’t stop you. Because I understand more than anyone you have attempted suicide lot and you have also suffered a lot”

I looked at him for a long time.

I stepped forward and closed the distance between us and kissed him — and it was nothing like the performances I had practiced over twenty five years, nothing like trying, nothing like strategy. It was just true. It was just finally, devastatingly, completely true.

He kissed me back like he had been waiting forever to and would wait forever more if that was what it took.

We stayed in the forest until the stars began to fade.

And in that last long night before the end of everything, in the only place in this world that had ever truly been mine, I let myself have this one real thing. This one night that belonged entirely to us – his hands and his voice and his certainty and the way he said my name like it meant something — and I held onto every second of it with everything I had left.

Because I knew when morning came I would find a way to kill myself, but first I’ll have to find Brian he was my last hope.

And he knew it too.

And neither of us said it out loud.

Because some truths are too heavy for the last beautiful night.

We watched the sun come up from the cliff above the borderlands.

Side by side. His shoulder against mine. The world going gold below us.

“So,” I said. “Do you like me?”

He was quiet for a moment.

“If there were a world,” he said, “where you and I were the hero and heroine from the beginning. Where none of this had to happen.” He paused. “That would have been something.”

Yeah, that would have been nice.” I said.

It was finally time to go search for Brian and let him kill me but Zane held my hand.

“Brian’s method will be painful…take this” Zane brought the white oak stake and placed it on my hand but he didn’t let go.

My eyes widened. I had watched that get lost when Tyson had angrily tossed it away.

“How did you find it”

“Ever since your first attempt at the bridge, I had stolen the real white oak stake and replaced with a fake”

What the?

Zane wasn’t lying when he said he had been watching me.

He must have been the shadow figure I saw in the forest that night.

I just didn’t understand why he avoided me and never made a move or revealed himself till now.

He saw it. His eyes dropped to it and came back up to my face and stayed there.

Anyways it was too late now for anything. I grabbed the stake and pulled it to me but he didn’t release it.

“Zane..” I bit my teeth and looked up at him “You said you wouldn’t stop me.”

“I won’t.” He swallowed and finally let go. “I meant it. You’ve suffered enough. I won’t make you stay for my

sake.”

I looked at the white oak stake and then back at the sunrise, then my eyes rested at him.

“Zane,” I said. “Why did you stay away so long?”

“I had to take care of something important, yet it turned out I was too late”

He closed his eyes.

“Thank you, Zane ” I told him and then I positioned the sharp tip and drove the stake with great speed before anyone else stopped me again.

The wood punctured through my heart and burst It open.

It was fast. The world tilted. His arms came around me as I went catching me the way he had always caught me, from a distance, in the dark, without asking for credit.

I vomited a mouthful blood instantly, my chest was filled with blood all around the stake at it slowly penetrated into my chest it self till it was fully buried in, my whole body vibrated from the pain, my face went red, all vein popping out as I gagged out blood and coughed violently and watched as my vision blurred.

I knew my life was slowly leaving me.

I was actually dying.

I felt his tears on my face.

The moon does not abandon those who endure the dark,” Claire said. And for the first time in twenty five years her voice was not petty or amused or chaotic.

It was just sorry. And warm. And terribly, genuinely fond.

“Rest now little hybrid. I’ll see to the rest.”

And I let go.

But before I did I suddenly heard Claire’s voice.

“Someone wants you to stay. You have successfully killed yourself but your soul cannot leave…yet!”

And then warmth struck me. A blazing crescent light somewhere in my chest where the Moon Oracle’s brand had been fading for twenty five years suddenly burned full and incandescent.
