Reborn, I Stopped Begging for Love, Then They Cried With Regret Chapter 04

Dad’s eyes were bloodshot, his hair was a mess, and he reeked of alcohol.

He gripped my arm and held on tight.

“The ticket’s gone! My family’s falling apart! I’ve lost everything!”

He glared at me viciously, flecks of spit landing on my face.

“I remember you got diagnosed with something in your previous life, didn’t you?”

“You should still be sick now, right? Go tell your stepfather!”

“He’s loaded. Get some money out of him for me!”

“Or I’ll keep hounding you.”

“Then nobody gets to live in peace!”

I frowned and tried to wrench my arm free.

“Let go.”

That only sent Dad into a rage. He raised his hand to slap me.

“You ungrateful little brat! How dare you talk to me like that!”

Before his hand could come down, someone caught his wrist in midair.

Grant had appeared behind us. He shoved Dad’s arm away and stepped between us.

Evan came up behind him and gave Dad a hard shove.

“Get lost.”

Dad stumbled backward and nearly fell.

The moment he saw Grant and Evan standing there, all his swagger disappeared.

He didn’t dare mess with Grant, so he turned on me instead, pointing at me and shouting abuse.

“You just wait!”

Grant’s stare turned razor-sharp.

“Show up here again, and I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your life too broke to feed yourself.”

Dad shrank back, then staggered away.

Grant turned to me. For the first time, he reached out and took my hand.

“Let’s go home.”

Evan stared coldly after my biological father as he left. Once he was sure Dad wasn’t going to come after us, he turned and caught up with us.

Back at the house, Grant was clearly fed up with the entire scene. His expression remained dark as he went upstairs to his study without saying a word.

Evan took Tessa into the home theater.

Mom waited until they were out of earshot before she finally exploded.

To her, Grant having to step in had cost her whatever standing she had managed to build in this family.

She rushed over, grabbed me by the collar, and broke down crying.

“Why can’t you just stay quiet and invisible?”

“Do you have any idea how hard I worked to earn even a little respect in this family?”

“Then you showed up and ruined all of it.”

“That broke loser of a dad of yours actually came here and made a scene!”

“What if Grant gets fed up with me?”

“Why did you have to choose me?”

“Can’t you stand seeing me have a decent life for once?”

The more she spoke, the more worked up she became, her nails digging hard into her palms.

Eventually, she fell silent.

She pulled a debit card from her pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table.

“There’s money on it. Take it and leave.”

“Find somewhere else to stay. A dorm, a rental—whatever.”

“Just don’t come back.”

I looked at the woman who had given birth to me yet despised me.

I was used to her selfishness and indifference by now.

I gave her a faint smile.

“Don’t worry. I won’t be around to bother you much longer.”

Mom frowned and took a disgusted step back.

“What is this now, another pity act?”

“I say a few words and suddenly you look half-dead. Who are you putting on this act for—”

She never finished.

Something warm suddenly ran from my nose.

A bright red drop of blood hit the carpet.

Grant and the twins had just walked back into the living room, in time to see it happen.

Tessa covered her mouth with one hand and let out a short gasp.

My vision began to blur.

The familiar tearing pain ripped through my head.

With everyone staring in horror, I collapsed to the floor.
