At dinner, my boyfriend peeled a crawfish—my favorite.

I automatically held out my plate.

He reached past me and placed it in my best friend Faye’s plate instead.

Faye smiled, satisfied.

“Not bad today.”

He scoffed. “If I don’t shut you up, you’ll just keep trying to break us up.”

Only after that—when he peeled the second crawfish—did he put one in my plate.

We’d been together two years.

He always gave Faye whatever he gave me first.

First. Before me.

I used to think I was okay with it.

That I could wait.

But watching that crawfish land in someone else’s plate before mine—

I didn’t want to be his second choice anymore.

I put the crawfish back into his plate.

I thought he’d at least ask why.

He didn’t.

When I looked up, he was already bickering with Faye again.

Back and forth, like I wasn’t even there.

Like the table only had two people.

I was the extra.

After dinner, Faye said she was full and told Stellan to pay.

He sighed. “You’re such a princess.”

But he still picked up the check.

No one asked if I’d had enough.

The front desk was promoting a limited-time anniversary offer:

$1,000 for a 50% off membership card.

Stellan paid.

The server asked whose number to register.

He said Faye’s—without hesitation.

He handed the first card to her.

She tucked it into her bag with a little cheer.

When he tried to get a second one for me, the server cut in:

“Sorry, sir. The promotion ends at 8 PM. It’s 8:01 now.”

“Maybe next time.”

One minute late.

And so many things were already too late.

He reached back and took my hand.

“It’s fine. You can use hers next time.”

I pulled my hand free—quietly.

Waiting for a crawfish wasn’t long.

Waiting for another promotion wasn’t hard.

But two years into this relationship—why was I always the one waiting?
