They Forgot My Name, They Forgot My Ticket, They Forgot Me Chapter 06

Dad helped Mom walk home. Cedric followed, his mind a tangled mess.

They opened the front door. Yasmin bounded over, phone held high, beaming. “Guess what? I got

hired by the Lind Group! I’ll be with Mom, Dad, and Cedric forever! I start tomorrow-I’m going to

be a perfect corporate woman!”

Only then did she notice their faces.

“Mom, Dad, Cedric-what’s wrong?”

Mom, eyes swollen, walked past her without a word.

Dad patted Cedric’s shoulder. “Tell her the truth. Gently.”

Cedric nodded. Dad followed Mom upstairs.

Yasmin frowned. “What truth?”

He led her to her room. The cool air made his head clearer.

“Yasmin, your mom and dad and I went to the station to report Jocelyn Vance missing…”

“Don’t say her name!” Her face contorted instantly. “She’s gone-why are you still looking for

her?”

In the past, he would have stopped. But this time, he just glanced at her and continued.

“The officer who received us was the one who found you back then. He told us-you’re not their

daughter. The test was wrong all along. Their real daughter and your birth parents were all killed in a car accident five years ago.”

“Impossible!” Her voice pitched into a shriek. “You’re lying!”

He opened his mouth to say more-but she shoved him and ran to her parents’ room.

She kicked the door open, eyes red, shrieking hysterically. “You made up this ridiculous lie just to make her stay! Saying I’m not your real daughter-how could you?”

“She’s only been gone half a month, and you’re already this worried? What about me? I was abandoned by you for sixteen years! Six years can’t compete with sixteen-you’re trying to drive me to my grave!”

She climbed onto the windowsill. “You forced me to do this! You’ll regret this!”

Mom stared at her contorted face.

This time, she didn’t rush forward begging her to stop.

For six years, she’d felt that Yasmin didn’t look like her or her husband-in appearance, in character, nothing like either side of the family. Jocelyn, by contrast, did resemble them.

She’d told herself it was just the sixteen years of hardship that had changed her.

But now, watching Yasmin’s performance, it all clicked into place.

Yasmin had never been crazy. She’d just used this tactic to get what she wanted.

“Yasmin. We’re not lying to you. You really aren’t our child.”

Dad stepped forward and pulled her down from the window. “The officer gave us a copy of the DNA report. You can see for yourself.”

Cedric handed her the copy.

It had an official government stamp. It was real.
