They Forgot My Name, They Forgot My Ticket, They Forgot Me Chapter 05

“I always knew this couldn’t stay buried forever. I just didn’t expect you to find out so soon…”

“The paternity test was accidentally botched back then. We didn’t realize until a year later. But by then, Yasmin was already living so happily with you, so we thought-let the mistake stand.”

“What are you saying?”

Mom stared at him blankly.

Seeing their bewildered faces, the officer realized-they had no idea.

He regretted his loose tongue. “Aren’t you here to confront me?”

Dad’s eyes went wide. “We’re here to report our adopted daughter Jocelyn Vance missing. What do

you mean Yasmin isn’t our biological child?”

Cedric grabbed the officer’s collar. “Explain yourself!”

In the reception room, the officer poured them tea and sat down heavily.

“When we verified identities back then, we accidentally swapped your biological daughter’s

records with Yasmin’s. That’s how she ended up with you.”

He took a breath. “When we found out, we wanted to tell both families. But we’d just learned that

your real daughter and her adoptive parents had been in a car crash a month earlier.”

“All three died on the spot.”

“Once we told you, we were afraid it would destroy you.”

He dropped to his knees in front of my parents. “I’m sorry. If we hadn’t made that mistake, maybe your daughter would still be alive.”

Mom’s eyes were red, tears falling freely. Dad lit a cigarette with trembling hands. Cedric stared at

the floor.

The officer left, then came back five minutes later with a file. He pulled out a photo.

“This is your daughter.”

“Look at her.”

Mom shot to her feet, staring at the smiling girl in the photo.

For six years, she’d tried desperately to make it up to Yasmin-because Yasmin had made her past

sound unbearable.

For Yasmin, she’d even hurt the daughter she’d raised for sixteen years.

And now the officer was telling her that Yasmin wasn’t her real daughter at all. She couldn’t accept

“You must be mistaken. You have to be.”

Dad put out his cigarette, exhaustion in his voice. “How was her life when she was alive?”

The officer paused. “Her adoptive parents loved her very much. And when she met her birth parents, she was their only child-so she had two sets of parents who adored her. She lived a happy

life.”

Dad’s eyes glistened. He forced a sad smile. “Good. That’s good.”

Cedric stood up. “Jocelyn Vance is missing. We need to find her.”

The officer called Jocelyn. After a brief conversation, he shook his head.

“She’s an adult. She says she’s safe and doesn’t want to see any of you. She says she’s starting her

own life.”

“Jocelyn…”

Mom collapsed to the floor, sobbing.

The name she’d deliberately ignored for six years-she finally said it again.

But the person she was calling could no longer hear her.
