The next day, I got an overseas call from a former coworker back home.

“Tess, Logan’s gone off the deep end.”

She kept her voice low, but I could still hear the shock in it.

“He’s calling in every favor he can to investigate Alyssa. That’s how he found out none of what happened to you before you left was an accident.”

I held the phone and looked out at the sunlight beyond the window.

“Is that so?” My voice stayed calm.

“I’m sure he regrets it now.”

My former coworker sighed.

“It’s more than regret. His hands were shaking when he got the evidence.”

My former landlord had turned over records of bank transfers and text messages from Alyssa’s

assistant.

The hospital front-desk nurse had finally cracked under pressure and admitted the truth.

Alyssa had pretended to be an authorized representative of Logan’s team.

She’d told the hospital I was a mentally unstable, obsessive stalker and told security to have me forcibly removed.

Only then did Logan understand that when I’d told him I was injured, I hadn’t been causing a scene

out of jealousy.

I had really been bleeding outside a hospital that wouldn’t even let me inside.

The most damning evidence came from the assistant who had shredded my original rehabilitation \ notes.

To protect herself, she handed over an audio recording.

Alyssa’s voice came through sharp and vicious.

“Cut every one of those pathetic notes to pieces.”

“Then take pictures of her digging through the trash like a dog and post them online.”

“I want the whole world to think she’s a shameless stalker obsessed with a boxing champion.”

“Let’s see how she tries to take Logan from me after that.”

Not long after I hung up, Logan called from overseas.

“Tess…”

“About the hospital…I thought you were trying to make me choose between you and the fight.”

“I just wanted you to stay quiet for a while and stop throwing me off before the fight.”

“But I swear, I never thought Alyssa would take it that far.”

A laugh escaped me.

“Logan, I sold my childhood home.”

“I stayed by your side through eight years of paralysis.”

“And in the end, I had nowhere to live and ended up in police custody at the Havenport Police

Department.”

My voice stayed flat.

“Wasn’t I obedient enough for you?”

His breath caught.

“I’m sorry, Tess.”

“I’m so sorry…”

He repeated the words over and over like a child who had finally been caught.

“I’ll deal with Alyssa.”

“I’ll get your childhood home back.”

“I’ll issue a statement withdrawing every false accusation against you.’

“Just give me one chance to make it up to you.”

“No.”

I cut him off.

“Logan, I don’t need you to make anything right for me anymore.”

I hung up.

Then I blocked his number.

He started flooding the institute’s program coordinator, Ms. Shaw, with requests, begging her to

arrange a meeting with me.

A few days later, Meredith stopped me outside her office.

“Coach Monroe, there’s news from back home.”

She handed me a cup of hot tea.

“Logan confronted Alyssa with the evidence and formally demanded a divorce.”

“He also demanded that she return your childhood home without conditions.”

I took a sip.

My expression didn’t change.

“Did she agree?”

Meredith shook her head.

“Of course not.”

“People like Alyssa don’t give back anything once they’ve gotten their hands on it.”

“She refused the divorce.”

“And she made one thing very clear.”

Meredith paused, then mimicked Alyssa’s smug tone.

“‘You want to make it up to Tessa? Ask yourself whether you’re even worthy of that.””

Steam curled above my cup.
