They Sent Me To Prison For Her, I Bought A Grave For Me Chapter 10

They Sent Me To Prison For Her, I Bought A Grave For Me Chapter 10

The mention of Ansel sent tears spilling down my face.

“He asked you to take care of me?”

Leith handed me a tissue, guilt tightening his expression.

“He reached out months ago. I was tied up with a research trial and didn’t get here soon enough”.

I wiped my eyes.

“Thank you.”

“There are still treatment options, Mirelle. Don’t give up yet.

I managed a faint smile but didn’t answer.

I knew my own body. Hope felt like something meant for other people.

Leith seemed to understand. He pulled out his phone and opened a message.

“Ansel made me promise. Whatever happens, I’m staying.”

My vision blurred as I read the words on the screen.

(I’ve never asked you for anything before. I’m asking now. She’s suffered enough. Please take care of her.]

I broke down.

From that day on, I took my medication on time. I ate when I was supposed to and stopped fighting every treatment Leith recommended.

Before medical school, Leith had spent several years working on fishing boats. He liked to claim no one in Greyfen could grill salmon better than he could.

Unfortunately, my stomach could only handle plain poached fish.

Sometimes a gesture or a certain look would remind me of Ansel, and I would lose myself in the memory for far too long.

Still, life slowly settled into something quiet and bearable.

Then Crispin found me.

“Mirelle.”

I had just stepped out of an examination room when I heard his voice.

He stared at my hospital gown, and his eyes immediately reddened.

“I was wrong.”

When he reached for me, I stepped back.

“We have nothing to do with each other anymore.”

My voice was cold.

“You’re not my brother.”

Crispin froze.

“I know what happened at Westmoor now. I know they hurt you. I’ve turned over the evidence, and

everyone involved is being investigated.”

He swallowed hard.

“And Jessa… I never knew she was capable of any of it. She’s under psychiatric hold now.”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“Mirelle, come back to Kingsmere with me.”

He reached for my arm, but Leith shoved his hand away.

“She said no.”

Leith stepped between us, shielding me from view.

“Leave now, or I’m calling security.”

Crispin looked ready to argue. Then he saw how pale I had become.

His shoulders sagged.

“Get some rest,” he said quietly. “I’ll come back another day.”

I hadn’t expected “another day” to mean the following afternoon.

i was sitting on a bench outside the oncology wing, letting the sun warm my face, when Ephraim,

appeared without warning.

“Mirelle, I-”

I looked past him and saw Crispin standing several yards away.

A bitter laugh almost escaped me.

“Do the two of you enjoy tormenting me?”

Ephraim’s eyes reddened.

“I’m sorry. I was too much of a coward to admit I loved you, so I kept using Jessa to provoke you.”

“Too afraid to admit it?”

I shook my head.

“Ephraim, I was never competing with Jessa for a man.”

“Do you remember taking the stand against me? The moment you lied under oath and sent me to prison, whatever I felt for you died.”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“I know I was wrong. Give me one chance to make it right. I’ll spend the rest of my life treating you the way I should have.”

Another apology.

Another promise that came years too late.

I looked away.

“I will never forgive either of you.”

Crispin finally stepped forward.

“Mirelle, Jessa deceived all of us. I never imagined the girl I raised could be so vicious.”

His voice trembled.

“She’s been dealt with. Come home, and I’ll make up for everything.”

My eyes burned.

“Did either of you imagine this day when you lied for her and sent me to prison?”

They both went silent.

“When I was being tortured inside Westmoor, you couldn’t even be bothered to look at me. Did you ever think about what would happen then?”

Neither man answered.

I wiped the tears from my face.

“You stopped being my family a long time ago. I will never forgive you.”

My fingers brushed the scar across my wrist.

“And I don’t want your compensation.”

I stood and returned to my room.

After that, Crispin tried to force every news outlet that had covered my conviction to issue a

retraction.

It wasn’t enough.

Ephraim’s testimony had been so convincing that the public still believed I had been the one behind

the wheel.

When Crispin realized that, he punched him.

“Mirelle is my sister. Were you trying to drive her to her death?”

Ephraim hit him back before he could finish.

“Yes, she’s your sister, and you were the one who handed her over to the police.”

His face twisted with rage.

“You did this to her, Crispin.”

He grabbed Crispin by the collar.

“If you hadn’t offered me a deal with Wexley Group in exchange for marrying Jessa, Mirelle would have been my wife.”

Ephraim shoved him away, stormed to his car, and sped off.

Crispin wiped the blood from his mouth and stood there for a long time.

The next morning, a breaking story took over every major news feed.

Crispin had turned over evidence of tax fraud at Quenby Holdings.

Before Ephraim could retaliate, he released records proving Wexley Group had falsified its

accounts.

By the end of the day, both companies were collapsing.

When federal agents led Crispin away, he looked directly into the cameras and smiled.

“Every personal asset I own will go to my sister.”

His voice remained steady.

“I told her I would make amends.”

The livestream cut off.

I sat in my hospital room, staring at the eight-figure wire transfer that had cleared moments

earlier.

A faint, humorless smile touched my lips.

Leith walked in, clearly having seen the news.

“They got what they deserved.”

I turned toward the window.

“Yes,” I said softly. “They did.”

Outside, sunlight poured across the glass, brighter than I remembered.
